What kind of media should I get for it? He said he'd put some bioballs in there, but don't I need a filter pad and some other stuff as well? So unaware with the media for canisters. Headin to the store tonight so I need to know soon lol

What you need to consider is what type of filtration do you want to focus on. Mechanical filtration or bio filtration?.

If you just want something in between i suggest a mix of some sponges and ceramic rings or bio balls like he also suggested.

Sponges will also server as biological filtering, but with less surface area for BB to grow on.

I'm thinking something along the lines of a filter pad, sponges or bioballs, and carbon at the end. got some for free so I wanna use it. Thoughts on that?

Carbon is only usefull for removing medicin or other chemicals from the water after any desease treatment, etc.

But yes, filter pad/sponse, bioballs or ceramic rings are all good choices.

I have an old Eheim and the one thing I would suggest is to put some vasoline on the seal in the top. It is easy for them to dry if not in use. Just a heads up, they can pinch easily also. With that said, they are GREAT filters.

In my OP,I would not use a Petroleum based lubricant b/c it tends to break down rubber over time.

bio balls are terrible in canisters. just use eheim medium.
Why are they terrible?

I use small sinking ones in my FX5, and they work great, and can be cramped together without flow being reduced much.

Picked up some DIY filter stuff I have gotten for my HOB filters before, and some quilt batting for mechanical filtration. I think I'll give the bioballs a try for my bio filtration and see how it goes. If I need to I'll get the ceramic cylinders.
