Eheim 2217 for $50 good deal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would spend a little extra and just run all Eheim media. Most of the media is just a one time thing. Mechanic ceramic rings don't need to be replaced, substratepro doesnt need to be replaced, the coarse blue pad can last forever and the fine white pad is really durable and last pretty long. In the end the most you will have to do is replace the fine white pad when it starts to fall apart.

I may do this, however if I wanted to set it up right away and see how it runs and all that I would have to do the setup I'm goin with right now just because none of the fish stores around here have eheim products :(

Prolly have to order it online, and I want to see how this sucker works before I shell out more than I actually paid for it in media lol

Updating...guy was legit, pretty cool. Got the filter home and rinsed / soaked everything in water / vinegar mixture, rinsed it all etc. Thing is workin like a charm so far, can't wait to get a colony established in there so I can turn off my noisy HOB filter TBH lol. Was a breeze to set up and prime, thought it was gonna be rough goin being it was my first time.

How long should I wait until I remove the HOB filter and just let the canister do it's thing? I put some stress zyme right next to the intake on the canister, hopefully they make it in there and start making a huge colony lol.

I have read two sides to this answer, some say that BB can reproduce (once a full cycle has been run, in this case it has in your HOB) every 4-8 hours, thus you should be good in less than 24 hrs to double the colony. The other side (and the one I trust because it's safer) is that the new filter will have to go through a mini cycle, basically watch the params until Nitrates start rising again. Although hen you get into the fact that the load has not changed so why would it go through a cycle? I get very confused on this and have read ALOT of science articles on it. I think it it couldnt hurt to leave it on for 2 weeks to be safe. ALSO add some stability by Seachem to jumpstart the process.
