Eheim 2262

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dear colleagues, I have a problem with snails, which enter the Eheim 1262 pump and slow down the flow. What should I put on the cover of the filter, where water enters, and snails also enter.
Thanks.

N nesone you could use a sponge pre-filter over the intake strainer but you will need to clean it frequently as it will get clogged with both tank debris and snails. You will want to prevent the snails from entering the filter as much as possible.

I would not use sponge type media on the filter lid at all to prevent the snails from entering the pump because you will need to open the lid frequently to unclog the sponge media.

Thank you. How much can I let the flow on the filters drop until the next cleaning? For security reasons, should something unforeseen happen to the canisters?
Now the flow is about 50 percent.
There are 2 Eheim 2262 in the tank.

Is the filter flow 50% because you have it turned down somehow or is it because the filter is a bit dirty?

How often to clean your filters depends on a number of factors such as how much uneaten food or poop gets sucked into filter and what your nitrate reading is when you test the water.

I would alternate cleaning the filters so don't clean them both at the same time. I usually wait 1 month between filters when I have 2 on one tank.

I didn't read any of your other posts but what filter media do you have in your 2262's? How often do you usually clean them and how dirty do they look when you do?

Sorry, been with work these days. I don't clean them at the same time. It is interesting that snails get into the pump, and they are there all the time. I bought Helana(killer) snails. They solve the problem in a tank. Perfect. The problem is snails in canisters. Helena killers cannot enter canisters.
Filter media is Eheim. On the top of canisters is spognes.
Now I put,
above sponge (prefilter).
Now the water flow is ok. I'll just see how long.
I will follow up and get back to you. Thanks for the answers.

A long time ago, I read, that a colleague from the USA had set up piece spogne.
Ih hole in lid.

I tried. The pump sucked the spogne. Not good.

You may want to be careful with that pink material you posted a pic of and check your filter after a month or so to see if it is still in good shape. It's possible that due to the high pump flow it will cause the material to fray and those bits of threads may get wrapped around the pump impeller.

I also remember someone using a piece of sponge stuck in the filter lid opening to catch snails, I'll try and find that post on one of the forums I frequent.

Update:
Unfortunately that person's website is no longer showing what type of sponge he used or how he secured it in place so it didn't get sucked into the pump. He hasn't been on the forum for awhile but if I find out, I'll let you know what he used.

Eheim makes a pre filter I have to imagine would prevent snails from entering filter.

The Morning The Morning , great idea but it won't fit on the 2260/62 and a couple other model Eheim filters.
