Well, I emptied my wallet this morning and bought a Eheim 2262 from BigAl's.
I have been sifting and sorting through reviews after reviews untill my head hurts.
And when it came down to it, it was really a hard decision between the FX5 and 2262.
But customer loyalty and dependability won me over.
Big Al's includes the quick disconnects which has been a big discussion on most of the Eheim threads as a must/need to have.
(I dont understand why Eheim does not include these with all there filters)
So I forked out the $430.00 for the filter.
I hope that the 2262 and the two Emp. 400's will be enough for a while.

So, I still need to order my powerheads and use my Dr FosterSmith gift certificate.
What does everyone recommend I get to fill the 2262?

i have never seen the point in running powerheads you may as well run internal filters then at least they are doing something apart from moving water

the eheim 2252 is a great filter and turns over 1200 lph

the best stuff to fill the filter with is siporex but it expencive and eheim substrate pro

I bought my FX5 for 250 off of ebay and love it!! It just keeps it so much more simple. I've had it for two years now and havn't had any problems.

The power heads will help move the waste around in the tank.
My tank is 8 feet long and 30" deep.
I have been told that the Emp 400's will not provide enough surface aggitation and/or deep water circulation to keep the waste from settling on the sand.
And I want the Eheim to focus totally on waste pickup and water cleaning. Not directional flow.
Have I been mis-informed? Will the Emp's and Eheim 2262 be more than enough to aggitate the surface and keep a deep water flow rate high enough to move the waste around and keep it from building up?

I know that surface cleaning of the sand will be needed. No way around it.
But I would like to keep it minimal. Cleaning a 300g tank that is 30" deep will become a PITA if it has to be done every week.
I would like to just stick with water changes every week and bottom cleaning bi-weekly....or longer.

You may want to add additional canisters i would never rely on one in case of malfunction. I have a pro 3, two fx5 and a 2260 on my 240 g, aro dat tank. you can get a fx5 $200 shipped of eBay i love eheim but the fx5 is a good deal and its provides lots of current. For media i use eheim and cell pore and don't forget the purigen.

Get the ehfisubstrat -- on drs F and S you can get 5L for 42 bucks. I think you can also go with the pro, but its quite costly, and you would need to spend a lot more to fill that mamoth canister of 2262 :)

I've got the 2262 on my 6' x 2' x 30"H tank & I added a Koralia 4 powerhead to keep the detritus suspended. I also have 2 AC110's that help with surface agitation and an Eheim 2217.

I'm using Ehfimech in the bottom for coarse media. I also bought Matala media(expensive!) and cut it into pads for a combination of mech & bio media. Then I'm using EhfiSubstrat Pro in the provided mesh bag as my major bio media. Finally, I cut a pad from filter foam and some filter floss as the final fine filtration.

It's working well for me. I am horribly over stocked so I need to rinse the mech. media once a month in the 2262. The AC100's need to be cleaned weekly.

I plan to add a second canister filter later on. But I cant swing the extra cost right now.
Besides, thats one of the reasons I picked the Eheim. So I dont have to worry about breakdown any time soon.
At least untill I get my tanked cycled and stocked.

Man, that Eheim substrate and filter media is insanely high priced.
It would cost half the price of the filter just to fill it with media.:irked:
I may just have to skip the powerheads for a while and just get the media for the Eheim.

My fish Better Love Me For This.:D

I run 10 fx5 on a 1200 gallon pond

Why not just get an Ultimate filter or a pool/sand filter. Much more energy efficient than running that many FX's.
