Wasn't my intention to bash you PK. I just get annoyed by people who hoot and holler about excessively over priced brand name products and dismissing "no name" products they have no personal experiences with.....the old, favorite goto "you get what you paid for". OK, I'm done venting, time to go clean some of my "no name" canisters ;)

Its all good. I agree and disagree there. I think brand name junkies definitely overpay way to much and there are great cheap options out there, especially if they've never used the brand name before.
haha I'd bet SunSun's and I've heard good things, better watch out though, they'll be big name brand before you can say "100% filter".

The problem I see with this type of vac, is that it returns old water back to the tank.
I consider it a waste of time to take out grit when the most problematic issue is the invisible chemical waste buildup in aquariums that is better removed with water changes.

I'm 99% certain the OP just wants something for substrate cleaning(solid poop removal), not a replacement method for w/c

Thanks guys! I'm not really into brand name or "no name" products as long it does its job then i'll take it, just because of my nature work and deal with new technologies all the time so I'm more into something new or high tech (minus 1 thing...I don't like high tech planted tank...at least not for now) products and often brand name company flood the market with their ads so it's a lot easier to over look other things cheaper and equal or even beat brand name product on the performances :D

+1 I use those vacs in conjunction with water changes. It's much easier to vac without pulling water too or vac while doing the water change. My faucets don't put out enough water pressure to use the gravel vac on the python I have and I will never go back to 5 gallon buckets hahaa

The problem with those things is they aren't submersible. Or, some say they are, some say they aren't. I was looking at getting one, figured it'd be real convenient. But, if I couldn't submerge it, it would've been useless for me. So, I just do the same thing with gravity, siphon solids into a filter sock in the sump--just so I don't have to look it. Same thing.

They most certainly are submersible, up to 3 feet according to the packaging, but I use mine on my 150 and it goes completely underwater and I have yet to have a problem with it.

The Tom Mr. Cleaner gravel vac just need to have the battery cap waterproofed then you can submerge it as well. Just slip on a ballon over the battery cap (like a condom) and you're good to go.

Nigel's Big Al's link doesn't work so I'll post another link http://www.kensfish.com/aquarium-supplies/aquarium-maintenance/tom-mr-cleaner-battery-vacuum.html
