The problem with those things is they aren't submersible. Or, some say they are, some say they aren't. I was looking at getting one, figured it'd be real convenient. But, if I couldn't submerge it, it would've been useless for me. So, I just do the same thing with gravity, siphon solids into a filter sock in the sump--just so I don't have to look it. Same thing.

How long is Dr.Toms vac? My tank is 28" tall, would I need to put a balloon or condom on it?

The Tom Mr. Cleaner vac is about 24" long with the gravel cleaner attachment. Since your tank is 28" tall, you should probably go with the Eheim...since you're not a big diy guy.
