On a serious note, Wolf's method works very well also. Same idea as mine, different approach, different filters. Both work well, which is better? IMO mine, in Wolf's opinion his, and in Joe Schmoe's opinion neither. Both Wolf and I like to have a filter designated for mechanical filtration, thus removing floaters, and keeping the water crystal clear. Then, having a second filter used for biological filtration to keep the tank cycled.
 
Exactly...No filter Ive ever seen can adiquatly do it all... I love the fluval 405's and the FX5's but in all honesty I would NEVER try to run a tank with one of them alone...

Don't tell Wyld this but the pro3's come a lot closer to bieng able to do this than the fluvals do...but I'll never admitt to saying it...

I'll never switch over to the 'green' side....you can't make me...
 
I small personal victory for me! :D I don't trust any of my tanks to one filter either, although some tanks simply just have 2 Hydro 5 filters, which is my absolute favorite type of filter there is.
 
LOL we have so many Hydro 5's in use that we always keep 4 or 5 cores and at least 10 extra foams around at all times...

Why would you hate Eheim classics? They are disproportionally cheaper than other Eheim filters per unit of filtration.
They are arguably the most long lived and demonstrably the quietest of the Eheim cannisters.

They all now come with double taps as standard removing problems of priming and have a thorough, easily found supply of cheap replacement parts available. I suppose they are annoyingly good ;)

Which is the reason they are so great! They don't cost anything! Many of the foods I buy for the fish cost more than a hydro 5! :D
 
I worked for general motors for over 18 years and my wife is a very well qualified auto tech...working fleet maintance for a huge communications company and you would never catch either one of us buying a general motors product...

They obviously get sold and obviously have a few fans... One of the things I've learned over the years is that there is no correct answer to brand loyalty... as they say on TV...your millage...and expierance may vary.

I am running a FX5 and 2 Emp 400s on my tank...

eheims are better suited for biulogical filtration. i use a magnum HOT to deal with the mechanical filtration. the lower GPH means that they are better suited to biological filtration because the water will spend more time amongst the bio media.
