Electric bill and Filtration.

When my heater broke in my last tropical tank I decided that was it for me and heaters! The power bills were just too much in winter when my house gets sits a 10 degrees celcious. Now I am down to running, a FX5, fluval 4 plus, a 4 foot light and an eight watt heat matt for my python.

Wow!
So after Reading all the replies, I have came up with an answer, I Think.
Having the four heaters in the 2 tanks in the garage and the 2 lcd big screens, is most likely the problem.

You'd be surprised how much power those LCD big screens will use.

I don't see why people even use heaters in the spring/summer when the tank never drops below 76 at the extreme lowest. If you want 86F then fine but most fish can live 72-82 easily. Not all but most tropical fish.

Without a heater, the tank temperature would be the same as the room temp. In the summer, we keep our house 18'C (64'F). In the winter, we keep our house 20-21'C (68-70'F). The only tank I have that doesn't need a heater is my 30g goldfish tank.

because it eliminates the temperature fluctuations and keeps it constant. which is a good thing.

obviously, in the summer they won't run very much to keep the tank at your normal temp., but they at least regulate it.

The problem is you live in California dude! The more you use the more you pay...the fourth tier of electricity is like 4 times the base rate! Ouch!
That is the problem when comparing to other utilities.

I love the difference in perspective.

Never drops below 76? I think 76 is a hot day. We do get the odd day here that is in the upper 80's (30'C+) but they're rare. I know a person that lives near me that recently retired. He loaded his snowblower into his truck and headed south. He said "the first time I get asked 'what is that?' That is where I stop." When it gets above 76, I barely go outside. I'd much rather be outside when it's -50'C.
