Without a heater, the tank temperature would be the same as the room temp. In the summer, we keep our house 18'C (64'F). In the winter, we keep our house 20-21'C (68-70'F). The only tank I have that doesn't need a heater is my 30g goldfish tank.
64F is way too cold for me. I have a friend who keeps their house cold to me at least. We just run fans and maybe the AC on hot days but mostly we leave it whatever the outside temps in. We live in Ohio though, so it's never super hot out. 80F isn't bad out at all.

because it eliminates the temperature fluctuations and keeps it constant. which is a good thing.

obviously, in the summer they won't run very much to keep the tank at your normal temp., but they at least regulate it.
My fish have all been fine. Then again mine would stay 78-82 mostly. To each his own.

I love the difference in perspective.

Never drops below 76? I think 76 is a hot day. We do get the odd day here that is in the upper 80's (30'C+) but they're rare. I know a person that lives near me that recently retired. He loaded his snowblower into his truck and headed south. He said "the first time I get asked 'what is that?' That is where I stop." When it gets above 76, I barely go outside. I'd much rather be outside when it's -50'C.

True.

Nice.
It peaked at 97 here today but the AC kept the house at a decent 78 degrees.
I have a deal with my wife, we won't live anywhere you can't grow Palm trees.

I hear cali is super expensive.

here in ontario our base rate is only $0.056 per kilowatt hour, or just under 6 cents.

I believe california is significantly more than this.

More! Haha.....

Pacific Gas & Electric: Base rate - $0.11 Kw-hr; over 300% of base - $0.50 Kw-hr

i turn off my heaters in summer. the temperature fluctuates, just like it would in the wild.

i pay $3.25 roughly for each of my eheim 2250s (uses the 1250 pump @ 28 watts). the heaters are not on 24 hours a day, maybe half the time. its about $12 for my 250 watt jager heater. it roughly $4 for the 100 watt jager on the 29 gallon...not cheap at all.

that's a lot of electric

tell me about it. it's one reason why i am thinking of downgrading to just my 29 gallon.

I have found that turning my gas heat in the house up in the winter lowers my electric bill more than the gas bill goes up. The electric still is 120 a month though and I have around 600 gl. of water being heated. In the summer I do not turn on the ac because I dont want to heat the same water over and over just to cool it down with the ac.

I am worried about electric bill also I have one 245 with 2 ac100 and fx5, 2 -250 heaters indoor and one 180 gal 250 w submersible pump and 2 250 w heater. Due to FRT turtles in each tank I need to keep water 84dgs f. I am thinking about insulating the outdoor tank with styrofoam Does anyone have any info on something liken that?
Thanks janevicki

I have no problem with the electric bill I live on the east coast were we have bad winters and sometimes long ones when I heat my home I heat my tanks in summer I do not use a heater from April till November I think it is the heaters that cause the electric bill to be high. I have six tanks 365,212,2 33,s,2 40,s and I have 6 canister filters and 1 sump and my bill for my whole house summer 60$ winter 80$ and nerver hit 100$

Lets break it down to tell you exactly.

3 FX5s=150watts and hour
2 405s=100watts an hour
2 sumps= I'm guessing you have 2 small pumps on each=200watts per hour.

Just for filters you are running 450 watts per hour or 335kwh per month. Thats probably about $40 per month alone and maybe more. Multiple your utilities rate times the 335 to know exactly. Your 6 heaters are probably using almost double that, but its hard to know exactly.

I was wondering what kind of electric bill everyone deals with. Mine was over $300. 3 fx5 2 fluval 405 and 2 sumps and 6 heaters.
2 180 gallon
1 100 gallon
Been chaging over to ac110, got rid one of the 180, Replaced it with a 135. down to one fx5.
Lowerd it to just under $200.
does this sound normal?
Guess I should mention the 180 and the 100 are in a well insulated garrage.
