ELECTRIC BILL SKY ROCKETS !

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Does each unit have it's own fuse box? If so,start flipping switches, and leaving one at a time off for awhile. If the other unit is tapped into yours they will complain when they don't have power.

i see where you may be right about your neighbors causing the difference in your electricity. especially if the bill started going up AFTER the coldest part of winter.

can you talk to your landlord? ask him to have the electricity company come out and audit the meters? i don't know where you are, but here, if you call Edison and tell them that you think your bill is wrong they will come and investigate for free. a couple years ago i had a meter reader falsify my readings for 6 months in a row. they sent someone out every month for 8 months to get the correct meter readings.

also.. for insulating the tanks.. cut a piece of plexiglass for the top (cutting around the filters) so it's a nice tight fit and then put a blanket over it at night. it really does help.

I have my tanks insulated and covered, and I put a slab of it in front of tnak after lights out. The only other question I have is this: There are only grounded/three pronge outlets in kitchen and bathroom. The sockets that I'm using are only for two-pronge plugs, so I have a 'cheater' to turn a two pronge socket into a three, even though there's actually no ground. Could this be making the difference? (Husband was going to change them into grounded three pronge shrtly after we moved here, but then realized it was not possible from inside of wall sockets, because there was no 'ground wire'. Then I found these 'cheater' plug'ins at the $1 store, so that's what I use. Otherwise I wouldn't even be able to watch television in there!

that will not impact your electricity bill. the ground wire is a safety thing. i think, if i were you i would be inquiring with the building codes folks and have the place inspected.

i like the idea about flipping off the breakers to see which one pisses off your neighbors.. lol.

I didn't read the whole thread so sorry...

However, my 75 gallon tank used to cost me $11.00 a month to heat (verified with a kill-a-watt meter), then I insulated it and it's down to around 7.50-8.00. I know it's not a lot but it does add up..

Try wrapping your tank with reflectix insulation....

Also, put all your tanks in one location so that they are all heating eachother, have them touching if possible..

What temp do you keep your tanks and what temp do you keep your house?

Shut off your main breaker to your apartment or all the small ones that feed your part (whatever you have access to) then ask all your neighbors if they still have power or lost partial power.

I have over 1k watts of heat running pretty much non stop in my 60° garage trying to keep the tanks at 80°, which they don't get to. Hovers around high 70's so they more or less run non stop and my bill isn't even $200 total. This isn't counting lights, pumps, lights/heaters for Geckos that run 24/7 too...

Either your rate went WAY up or you are footing a neighbors bill.

I would start by calling the power company. I'm sure they can shed the most light on this situation.
