Electric Blue Jack Dempsey Breeding Project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks everyone :)

So I'm veryyy excited! A couple of days ago I bought home a (hopefully) female split gene!! :)
Things seemed to go well when I put her in the tank. Normally the ebjd attacks anything else I put in there (Other than the pleco and clown loaches)
But he swam up to her with his gills out and fin straight up and just followed her around for ages.
They still swim around together and he chases and pecks her occasionally. I'm thinking this is good? But I'll give it a week or so and see if things are still the same.
She's not as interested in him as he is her at the moment.

I'm not expecting any eggs or anything for 6-12 months as they are both a little small at the moment (10cm). But we will see what happens I guess.
They might have a few trial runs :)

Does anyone have any further tips on how to tell if they are pairing up or not?
I've added some pics, quality isn't that great. Will add some off my camera later on :)

I had a 4" JD female with my 6" EBJD and he looove her and so did she but i did have the tank set up for them so i had to take her back to the LFS.. :(

The ebjd acting dominant over the (het for blue) jack is definately a good thing. Make sure there is enough stuff in the tank for her to hide if she needs to. Hope it carries the gene, you will have to wait until they spawn to find out.

Here's some better pics :)
Last night I got home and they had been fighting.
The ebjd had his top fin torn a little. No harm on either of them apart from that. And they were both very dark in colour.
Not sure whether to let them go for a bit or separate them.

I know fighting is normal and means they might be pairing up but I think they might be too young to spawn...
So should I let them go and see if they spawn early and I get lucky.
I haven't done this before so if someone has any advise let me know :)

It's said that babies from two EBJD are very fragile and unstable and don't live to be too healthy.

Agreed. Have heard this on everything I have read about breeding EBJD.

Oh I thought the injury to the ebjd's fin was from the female ;)
Once again its a very good thing the ebjd can handle the female that's half the battle when trying to breed them. Its just a matter of time if you keep up with the water and feedings.

Bit of an update and any advice wouldn't go astray :)

The other morning I woke up to a clean rock and these two in a crazy liplock!
It was pretty cool to watch and they both seemed as strong as each other.
But his fins were torn really bad by that time.

So I decided to separate them just to be safe.
I know they will always fight like this but seeing as it was the first time I just wanted to check he was ok.
He wouldn't come out of his spot for a day and he wouldn't eat for a day.
I think she did something to his mouth cause there was a little stringy white thing hanging out when he breathed. That disappeared after a day as well.
And his fins are on the mend now.

So I'm not sure where to go from here. He has been growing a little lately which is great.. I'm hoping to grow him bigger and hoping that she won't grow too much too fast. I know it's a long shot though.
If that happens I'll definitely put her back in. But if they stay a similar size to each other I'm not sure...

I don't really know where to draw the line.
I've got a three foot she can live in for a while til I figure it out.

What does everyone think about this?
