Electric Blue Jack Dempsey Breeding Project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My ebjds are twice the size of the females, iv had no issues at all.

I had my ebjd males fighting once, now that was a hell of a sight to see.

They are both probably a little small to be able to breed yet so its probably just the standard cichlid territorial agression. I would suggest adding a couple smaller dithers. That may take some of their focus off each other. You could also seperate them in the same tank with a divider.

Yeah I can't put a divider in my tank cause there's a huge piece of wood that runs right through it.. Didn't think about that did I.. Haha.

I think I will definitely try dithers if I put her back in..

The ebjd at 10cm 1 year old should be ok to breed. If anything hes failing the test shes putting him through.

Get another fm or try to grow him out so hes bigger. A bigger ebjd and a smaller Jd is ideal form my experience.

Yep just need him to grow a little faster! Haha.
But I know these fish are slow growers so I gotta have some patience.
That's ok, I've got somewhere to put her for the time being :)

one thing you should do is ditch the pleco when they start laying eggs, he will eat them! plecos arent straight herbivores like most people think...im speaking from personal experience here...if youre looking for algae control, try a dwarf species of pleco

Thanks, yeah I got him out pretty much as soon as I put her in there.
I heard they eat eggs in the night time. Creepy. Haha.
For now female JD is in my three foot.

Ebjd has been having lots of growth spurts lately which is great.
He's just lost all of his blotchy black marks. So I''m hoping soon the cool defined black patterns will come through :)

Does anyone have suggestions on what's best to feed ebjds for growth and colour?
At the moment I feed him small amounts of protein pellets twice a day and brine shrimp at night which seems to be working well.

pmed ;)

Still waiting on more growth...
Funny though, since he's got a tiny bit bigger and lost all his black (and since I removed the female) he just sits in the same spot all day at the back of the tank.

He's absolutely fine though. All I do when I wanna feed him is stick my head around to his corner and gently tap the pellet container on the glass and he comes straight up for food (like a well trained dog haha) It's good that he knows what this means.
Just funny that he's stopped swimming around the tank all the time.

I'm not planning on putting the girl back in for a while.
She's happy in her own 3 foot tank anyway :)
