I recently acquired two more juveniles and I'm attempting to grow them out. I ordered a UV sterilizer and a pump to combat some green water problems in an unrelated tank I have. I think I'll attach the sterilizer to the grow out tank instead and see if that helps with their survival.
I know this post is old, but jsut an FYI for anyone wondering... UV sterilizers help a ton when it comes to these fish.. I had great water quality (ammonia 0 nitrites 0 nitrates 10ppm, stable pH & temps) when I bought mine, and one still died due to parasites, even after using Jungle Clear parasite tabs, bloat meds, etc... after adding the sterilizer, the 2nd from my first purchase is now 3+ inches or so (he hand feeds too

), and the 3 smaller (1.5") juvies I just purchased are doing famously.
Here's my question... why don't people just buy BGJD juvs from a reputable source (so you know they're BGJD and not regular gene) and one EBJD from elsewhere, instead of buying two EBJD's from different sources and waiting for your EBJD/RGJD combo to breed and the fry to grow?
You have pretty much the same chance of getting fish from the same genetic lines.. and BGJD are dirt cheap. Plus, that way you don't have to worry about housing an extra male that you can't breed (if you bred the first male to the second male's fry, it'd be second generation inbreeding of course). Plus, it saves you an easy six months if not more.
Personally, I bought 10x BGJD and 5x EBJD (BGJD from one source, EBJD from two separate sources.. only have 4 EBJD now as explained above) juveniles, and I'm growing them out to hopefully end up with 3 breeding pairs sourced from a total of 3 genetic lines. If all goes well, I'll probably end up buying a 4th EBJD from Rapps to add more healthy genes. This approach seemed responsible to me, anyone disagree?
