Yeh. EBJDs are extra fragile. I noticed this the first day I added them into the tank. But after that day, they became very active. NOw, they are very healthy and happy 
so far im not seeing the fragile part..i know they are..but..he runs the while tank, and he's only about 3cm..lol..the res of the fish are 1-2 inches
he gets the most food, is the most active, and beats up everyone else..lol
im going to have to divide the tank if it keeps up, lol

I had a Blue Dempsey too. he was not nearly as agressive as the other similar sized cichlids including a JD he used to lip lock with. One day he ended up being singled out and beat up to the point where I came home and he was missing almost all of his fins.
Make sure he's in with less agressive fish for sure, or by himself IMO

They are very slow growing cichlids compared to other CA/SA cichlids like oscars, jags etc.......But I think (at least mine) they are far from fragile .......I was on vacation for a week and something went wrong with my tank ......wiped out everything(aro, flagtail, gourami) except the EBJD and a ornate bichir.........mine is a powerhouse and actually quite aggresive.....I tried to introduce a GT into the tank and all he did was beat it up(the GT was the same size).......so thats just my take on the species.......heres some picks of my 7" guy...........
