Electric cat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
At this point the only tank I have available is a 55. I already took on a pair of clown knives , a gold severum, a marble goby and a pair of syno cats that filled the 125. If no one buys it before the store has to be closed on the 15th of this month, ill take it to keep it from the freezer but that's it

They aren't known as being the most "active" fish. If its between your 55 and the freezer...go with the 55. Mine was only active when food was in the water and when the lights went off. Stick it in the 55 and then make plans to upgrade.

If you do end up getting the Electric cat they are nice fish. I had one and it was *****in. Sold it to a buddy who named the right price and it died 2 weeks later. According to him and other peeps that I have talked too, they are sensitive. I don't think so but maybe thats true cuz I care more about my fish than they do. Lol

I've not really found them sensitive at all. Very strange. I bought my first one from a "Petland Discount" for $0.99. He was literally the size of a single good and plenty candy lol.

Probably one of my favorite fish. Just stinks you can't put anything with them. I had mine with a blackbelt cichlid. He lived but the electric catfish tormented him. It was sad. The electric catfish would come out at feeding time and the blackbelt would dart to get as far away from him as possible.

Honestly I think it will be fine in a 55g for a long, long time. If it does outgrow the tank, cross that bridge when you come to it, because the information about max size you find on the internet is a total mess of confusion. Probably my favorite out of all the fish I've kept.

how big? I've been shocked plenty of times. If it's under 6", it will give you a jolt, but it's pretty harmless. If it's bigger than that... you probably want to avoid getting shocked.

my electric catfish would only eat feeder fish and maybe blackworms, although some people have been able to get them on to pellets

I'm a little worried about getting him to eat. Anyone have suggestions? Also, how bad of a shock do they actually give?

They're not picky. If he's not eating you can try an earthworm. Should take pellets in a matter of days though.

The little ones give you a surprising shock. Over 6", like pudgeking said, watch out.

Little guys = finger tingling

6" or so = hand tingling

6" + = You'll end up whipping your hand out of the tank

The main thing that you need to know about an electric cat is that the larger they are the stronger their electric charge. When young they cant really kill anything unless it's housed with very small fish. I've had mine for 2 years, got it when it was only about an inch long. Now it's 6 inches, and I recently tested his sting as I have done a few times throughout his life; it's pretty intense haha. Anyway; he is alone for obvious reasons. They're actually a somewhat difficult fish to agitate to the point of it using its electric defense (I had it housed with balas, crays, a dwarf frog, etc for over 8 months before it killed the frog). I have seen people (even a LFS) house them with other fish, but it's essentially the only bottom dweller and there are plenty of places for it to hide alone. The problems arise when something else tries to share the space....
