there is the E-cat, E-ray and an E-skate but that dont mean they are compatible, you still have the option of one eating the other

FRP,
Imy Q's for you are:
-how do you clean it sand with an e-eel? my tank is bare, only two large peices of driftwood and i hate barebottom tanks. i prefer sand but i would prefere barebottom if he/she is going to fling sand up into my filters.
-Also, can you keep anything else with it?
-is there any way to be shocked through the tank? my wife is worried my daughter will be shocked.
-* anything special i should know that hasnt beed said already?

No, they aren't going to fling large amounts of sand up into the filters. In fact, they will fling far less than big CA cichlids, IME. Barebottom would still be safest, as a 30" electric eel CAN put a brief hurt on you (mainly from you careening backwards from the shock and knocking your head against something hard!). You could always try oak leaves instead.

Yes, you can keep other electric eels with it, but I wouldn't in that size tank. The waste 1 will generate alone is going to nearly overwhelm whatever filtration you use. Massive water changes are the key to long-term husbandry.

No, it will not shock you thru the glass. But do make certain younger ones CANNOT ACCESS THE FISH. I ABSOLUTELY STRESS THIS. THEY CAN BE INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS TO UNPREPARED AND OVERLY INQUISITIVE YOUNGSTERS.

Actually, they are extremely easy to keep. They will live in disgustingly polluted water, eat just about anything, and are hand-tameable to boot. That doesn't mean that any of those three concepts should be followed :grinno: - I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how interesting and interested these regal creatures are. Much more fun than any e-cat I've ever owned. Just be prepared to house a creature than will definitely grow larger than 30" and can live for 20+ years. I hope your interest in it can be sustained that long ... few do compared to the #'s that are sold. Good luck!

what about other types of fish with it? ones large enough not to be eated.
The tank is almost 6' tall, the little one wont be able to get to it.

That will be an awesome tank for an electric eel.. put some locks on that lid.. that was a joke but might not be a bad idea..

the glass lids are pretty heavy and i keep the light on top of the openings so it shouldnt escape

No, other fish are not suitable in a tank that size. Just because the eel "cannot" eat the other fish, does not mean that the eel cannot cause serious damage to it via stun/shock. Try it if you wish, but I think you will find they are truly a species only tank fish.

I would make very certain any little ones (including those that may visit) cannot access the water.

Doubt it was but if it was a large one it could have knocked you out with a shock..

If anyone caught National Geographic: Amazons Deadly Dozen they talked about them shocking black caimen.
