You can try the floating fake lily pads to shade off the surface. Most of my smaller tanks I do this because led lights tend to overwhelm smaller tanks. On my 125 I have a piece of smoked plexiglass on each side of the top to create a spotlight effect with shaded off sides.

You buy it that way...you can get clear, smoked, or an opaque color. Here's a sample. One smoke version is grayish and the other is more dark amber tone



translucent color sheets. good for color light effects



or solid color opaque sheets. these are good for backgrounds

UPDATE. E.eel still showing signs of stress. Still barely moves at all and doesn’t seem to be interested in eating.
