OK I love MFK, lots of cool people with great setups and they even show us pics of said setups & fish...it's awesome. BUT...

The snobbery around here re: fishkeeping is just waaaay out of control. First you've got the ones who assume everybody that works at a chain is an idiot. Then you've got the oh I'd NEVER have a JD (or oscar, convict, severum, whatever) because EVERYBODY has those and I NEED something RARE. So they get a dat...cuz yeah, nobody has a dat. Except they do. So they get that dat and then the next fad is in and they're trading in the dat to the lfs because dats are boring, everybody has dats. No what's boring is you fad fishkeepers who look down on keepers who keep what they enjoy, be it oscars or whatever. These are the guys who can't/don't ever keep a fish for life. If somebody in another hobby played the fad game they'd be ripped for it & rightly so...take herps for example. But we tolerate them here re: fish

Then, and this is the worst, you've got the I only want wild caught fish crowd. The I don't want some F1 crap bunch. And the best part is half of them would be the first to chastise you for keeping a wild native fish...but yet it's ok to pillage the rivers of South America etc for their pleasure. I can see not wanting a hybrid and being leery of that when buying CB fish, but come on...how many times is that the reason? What it boils down to is they're too lazy/impatient to grow out young fish so they're running around saying I need a WC 15" trimac NOW!!!11! Or I don't want some farm-bred arowana, I want wild caught...and who cares how many adult aro's get their heads lopped off, I want my WILD CAUGHT baby aro and I want it now.

Clearly to these types of fishkeepers the fish are just toys for their amusement. That's fine I guess, but let's call it like it is. If it's cool to flame the overstockers/Japanese-stylers, and the P keepers, then fair is fair, let's rip the fish snobs too.

I don't really understand your justifications for starting this thread, I don't see any positive coming out of it. Threads like these are not only annoying, but pointless. I'm sure you feel better having ranted and all that, but you have to consider the reprocusions of your words and actions. So what if someone butt hurt you, get over it. EVERY website you go to is gonna have all the crap you so eliquantly described to some degree. Its a fact. You can't have THIS MANY people together on one board without having clashes in preference or opinions. What makes you the better man/woman is how you take it.

Huh? I thought I was on the wrong forum. Most people on this forum are quite knowledgable about our hobby. There can be debates between members but most the time these debates yield new information for everyone else. This forum is pretty well monitored by the moderators and also by some of the more respected members. Us as members can usually weed out the riff-raff and keep this board running smoothly, but there are some who just want to start trouble by forcing their opinion on others. The trouble makers are given many chances and the more troublesome ones are either shunned by the members or banned. It all comes down to everyone's opinion and that's what makes this forum so great. If someone irks you, remember they have a right to air their opinions, and you have a choice whether to listen. :chillpill: Thanks, The Doctor.

people can be snobby about all kinds of different things and fish is will be one of them.
but who really cares each to their own imo.
people will always have different reasons for doing something and as for the datnoid so caled fad maybe your right and maybe your wrong but lumping all datnoid owners into one pot makes you kinda snobby about owning fish that i and others would not keep.

i will leave this open but it will be getting watched so please keep the discussion as a discussion and not a flame fest.

Yeah you're probably right...

Contridiction. You also fail to relize that most people who want Wild Caught fish (myself included) want it so they know where their fish is coming from. So they know it hasn't been crossed, or selectivly bred, or from poorly kept parents or something down the line. Also, on most Wild Caught fish, the coloration is better. How is that snobbish? When you put as much money into this hobby as other people have, it makes perfect sense to get the bang for you buck. Why get that dully colored Trimac when you can get a Wild Caught one for a couple dollars more, that is stunning to look at?

You'll also notice that if a fish is hard to find in the wild, MOST fishkeepers will get the captive bought ones even if there is wild caught specimens avaliable. They're trying to conserve the fishes natural habitat and population, which if you ask me, is a pretty noble cause.

And whats wrong with wanting something rare? Sure, Dats are popular because they aren't common... but they ARE common, but apply this to other hobbys. Cars, for example. A corvette isn't rare.. but it's rarer than a Sunfire. So you'll take the Corvette if you can. No one really wants things that are common, and there's hardly anything wrong with that.

And when MOST workers are idiots at chain stores, why would you assume there's knowledgable ones out there? There are, yes, but a vast majority don't know what they're doing, and are probably high school kids who just need the money. You don't ASSUME the rare things are going to happen. That's clearly irrational. "I have never seen a giant dog.. but I expect one around this corner, and I'll treat this corner as if it will soon see a giant dog". Doesn't make sense does it?

I for one haven't been here long, as while I have seen members who aren't helpful, and give clearly bad adivce, this number isn't even comparable to the number of people who have helped me out, taught me some things, and obviously showed interest into a topic, and talked about their own knowledge and experience about ____ topic.

I think everyone on the forum will agree with me, that a diversity is better. If people ONLY wanted to discuss Datnoids, they'd find a Datnoid forum. But most people interested in (insert fish here) are also interested in other fish. No one here wants this forum to be a single-specimen forum, so to speak. Granted, some people (again, me included) don't LIKE certain fish, they certainly don't look DOWN on those who do like those fish. To use you example, I would NEVER keep a Peacock Bass.. I think they're ridiculous, they take up too much space, and I don't like how 15 of them are stuffed into some people's tanks (although those 15 fish are, to be fair, gorgeous and very healthy). But I certainly don't have a problem with those who do want to keep them in whatever way, or want to learn about them, or keep them or something. Diversity is better, and 99% of the people here will agree with me.

First, I'm glad you're not talking about me, and second, I often see F1 fish with better color than wild caught because they're more used to a "tank environment"

Just my $0.02

There is nothing wrong with CTU2fan viewpoint since it takes different opinions to have a discussion. Its great people can feel comfortable and be allowed to say what they think is important to them just as its okay for people to disagree with them. Everyone is free to choose which threads to view and post to as they see fit. I can see many sides (often more than 2 sides here) of things said and dont think badly of them even though I may think differently. I would never read or reply to a "Whats the biggest/meanest/most expensive/largest ... fish" type thread for example. I also dislike the store bashing that occurs since this is a sign of immaturity IMO just as I admire positive feedback threads despite the negative comments which always occurs on them but again thats simply my opinion. I do have more time for the people I know have been helpful to othes (including me) before. I dislike helping people who dont bother to say thanks or sometimes even criticising you for having a different opinion to theirs.

This type of discussion here is much more informative and educational than some of the ones I just mentioned previously. Heated without getting personal and being able to see different sides.
