Elitist MFKers rant

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its all a matter of preference. Lets not hate because of the choice of fish we keep. MFK is open to all kinds of fishkeepers .

Lets enjoy the fact that we can enjoy our hobby with fellow fishkeepers rather than putting a label and dividing us up...

I will say if your only problem with MFK is other peoples preferences than consider it a small one. There are places on the net where simply disagreeing earns you a ban.

Here you are free to disagree. But I would think what someone elses fish preferences are is little in the broad spectrum of what this site brings to the table and is all about.

I think all opinions are appreciated and what makes this site good is everyone has a different one. And no one is wrong. Just a matter of opinion.

got bunched up pantys???

solution is untie them and ram your head into a wall....

but seriously this site is for everybody and everybodys opinions and that's what makes it great there is always something going on....fish snobs newbies idiots all welcome to talk fish... most people here keep cichlids and I don't think I have every seen a flaming for keeping oscars or any other cichlids.... dats maybe a fad but they are a awsome fish... when stable they are stunning fish.... but what ever

WOW man, clearly you haven't been on a lot of forums... MFK is probably the most open minded, and un-snobbish place I've found... I vastly prefer MFK to AC for exactly this reason (..."you can't put a goldfish in with an oscar, that's just not right!"... - nevermind that he's happy, and the alternative was flushing or feeding him to something).

If this forum is too snobby for you, maybe you should scale back your internet usage to porn only ;)

:iagree:

What I take away from this rant is the fact that those of us who'd keep specialty or rare fish may not interact with those of us that keep the normal LFS stocked fish. My point is that when I started keeping fish, I only knew what was available at Petsmart or the LFS if a even ventured that out of my comfort zone. It was Oscars and Electric Yellows mixed with Green Terrors and a Jack Dempsey. All together, swimming around in a smaller than needed tank. Thought I was the $hit with my setup. It's now been quite a while I have several tanks with single species and individual biotope tanks. I'm sure that is much like most of us on here, but some tend to "look down" on those still in the infant stages of this hobby. I feel that maybe the poster of the rant may keep fish near and dear to him, but seem "old hat" to others who may be too quick with their words and their idea of those fish being a "waste of time" or "not a real MFK'r" don't understand that we are all opinion based (98% of us) and hearing what others say really does affect our overall outlook.
Now I know 1/8 of you just said to yourself, "who cares what others think", but in reality, MOST of us do!! It really does matter when my favorite fish, a lowly Oscar, is called boring or dumb or a waste of time by some guy who has a 1 million gallon "hobby tank" filled with Arapaima Gigas, or the guy who has Dats this week and Birchirs the next to keep up with some other poster.
Opinions really do matter. Approval and acceptance is what most look for. We are not all as sociably acclimated to harsh critisicm though we'd like to think so. Maybe what the thread starter is getting at is that a kind word goes a lot further than being so quick to judge others.
Always remember, we all started somewhere and some way in this hobby. Most likely the same as those you are taking a low shot at.
Just my 0.02

I came here to say almost exactly that.

MFK has a huge mix of fishkeepers, all with different styles of fishkeeping and different opinions, and the majority of the time all of us get along fairly well while still putting forth our experiences for others to learn from.

Well, my 2 cents.
Yes we have fish snobs, but I think we are better than most.
Some prefer less common fish, I do, mainly because you can see the more common ones anywhere and I enjoy the frustrations and heartache of trying to track down, acquire, and keep alive the oddballs and difficult fish.
Nothing wrong with the more common types, it's just I have been there and done that.
Slamming chain stores, a lot of people do (with some justification), on the other hand the best local source for fish around here is Walmart, this one does a very good job at keeping clean and disease free tanks.

Hybrids? I don't care for them but hey, a lot of people do.

Wild caught fish? If it is rare or threarened then I hope to see it captive bred.
Over the years a fair # of the fish I have kept have been wild caught (by me), currently I have LMB, pike minnows, and bluegill.

Oh well, with the more than 20,000 members here we are all bound to disagree on something.

well i must say im shocked,18 posts so far and no abuse,i love this site but there are one or two members who i think. just love to rip some one up just because his/her knowledge is in its infancy,, on the whole 99% of members are cool, its just that 1% of knoledge snobs who take great pleasure in telling you how wrong you are
