So I was bored one day 3 months ago and decided to do something fun - i.e. trying my hand at breeding cichlids.
I noticed that there's a distinct lack of Thorichthys species hybrids (besides the common firemouth) so I decided to start there.
Specifically, T. maculipinnis/ellioti looked to be the best looking Thorichthys species, so I obtained a male of the species and stuck it into my tank.
So anyways I never breed cichlids ever before so I decided to go with something common and relatively unexpensive for my Ellioti to breed with in case anything goes horribly wrong. XD Convicts were very common, cheap, and I've kept them before, so I sorta know how they are. Hence about 3 months ago, I obtained 3 females to go with my Ellioti.
Anyways the Ellioti paired up with one of them (let's call her Convict #1). She laid eggs three times, but none of the batches were fertilized by the Ellioti.
About 2 weeks ago though, a different Convict laid eggs (let's call her Convict #2) and her batch was fertilized! Funnily enough, the Ellioti is still paired with Convict #1.
Because it was stressing out Convict #2 to have three other cichlids in with her that sorta hated her guts, I removed all three. Last Sunday evening I came home to see most of the eggs gone. Disappointingly, I removed Convict #2, hoping that I can at least save some. When I returned to the tank tho, I noticed things wriggling in the gravel - and lo and behold, cichlid fries!
It's been 7 days since then, and the fries are now free swimming.
So yeah, I now have about a hundred or so Ellioti x Convict hybrids swimming around happily in my tank. Mind you, this is my first time breeding cichlids (as stated) so I don't really know what I'm doing. But they're still all alive (or so it seems), so that's good.

Momma 'fighting' Poppa + Convict #1 (Ignore the sound, that's from Eureka)
Fries - Day 6. Kinda hard to see them against the gravel.

Fries - Day 7. Now they swim all over the place.
)
Still entirely unsure as to how they'll turn out, but given the number of fries swimming around I do hope at least a few turns out really nice.
