EMERGENCY: High Ammonia

Problem

1. Did a WC and noticed a neon lying at top and swimming down and up over and over... Tested and got .50 amonnia did 2 50% WCs and haven't seen a drop (waiting 15 min. to test again after 2nd WC)


2. Red gills for neon




Tank/Water

3. 20g, setup for 6 plus months, 9 neons, 3 platies, all platies finished growing, some smaller neons but most adults
50% weekly WC

6 plus months, gravel, 1.5 inches deep

7. Don't age water, use a dechlorinatier (API)


8. - temp 75-77 farenheit

- pH 8.0

- ammonia reading .50

- nitrite reading waiting on testing

- nitrate reading waiting to test

Use all municipal water

9. Haven't added anything in for a month..


10. Hikari pellets, once daily, 4-5 pinches

Ok just tested again and I have
.50 ammonia
.00 Nitrite
.00 Nitrate

I'm off to do yet another 50% WC and wait another 15 min..

Besides the water changes, do you happen to have any zeolite around? Or an LFS nearby where you quickly could get some? It's effective for removing ammonia in emergency situations. Others might recommend some Seachem products like Safe?? (but I don't know much about those, they're not easily available where I live). Hope you get a hold of the situation, good luck.

Is that a form of carbon? Don't have any around and my LFS is a petco with only the cookie cutter stuff but they probably have safe

I am testing with the API master kit liquid.
No, I haven't tested the tap water.
I'm using the API tap water conditioner.

Grab some Seachem Prime if you can get it or AMMO LOCK. Follow directions.

Thin out that gravel substrate to 1/2"...you likely only have 12 real gallons due to displacement...more water = more dilution. Posted tank gallons includes the glass walls which is false.
