EMERGENCY: TEMP up to 90 degrees

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hi guys thanks for tips, here's a couple tips i learned by research:

1. don't put ice cubes or anything frozen b/c it will be a dramatic temperature decrease. just imagine putting ice in a warm cup and how quick the water temp changes. this will stress your fish.

2. turn your heater UP in the summer. b/c mine was set at 82 and it hit 90 which is a 8 degree change. i now set mines at 84, so next time if it hits 90 it will be a 6 degree change in temp which will stress the fish less. you can even set it to 85 or 86 so that the temp changes won't be so dramatic.

Thats crazy how some of you dont use a heater through summer must get hot where you guys are...
If i didnt have a heater in my tank through summer my water would be chilled drinking cold water lol!

Chiller for tropical fish :grinno: More aeration should do the job. Last year, I tried the frozen water bottle method - pain on the butt! :nilly: The tank temp only went down from 90 to 88! :irked: This year, I run my systems with a good air pump that can run up to 60 air stones! I put 6-8 air stones in each tank - Tank temp 84-86 :) BTW, just unplug the heaters. For some reason, heater keeps turn on and off, even tank temp is higher than set temp. Don't count on those set temp. :grinno:
I got to try this out since I have some spare pumps laying around.

Sorry but this is nonsence:screwy: Two, 2 liter bottles of ice in a 100gallons of water will change nothing drastically, it'll only drop the temp a couple of degrees at best.

Heat the water more to avoid less of a temp swing :duh: the idea would be to keep the water from excessive heating not add too it.

I didn't realize you had a 100gal. the analogy ice in a cup is great! if your tank is 8-20oz!! but to do with inexpensive DIY methods (chillers? a luxury item)

I still stand by my suggestion to use a bunch of 20oz bottles with frozen water so it can be spread around. 2L bottles are good idea but it will be really cool in isolated area where it floats.

or try the good old tons of ice in ziplocks (or blue ice packs) & squeezing the air out, or better yet get those 1qt plastic containers (or use empty paper cartons that hold milk or juice), freeze with aged or conditioned water, then dump them in direct. I'd say about 8-10 at a time, keep them handy as august has yet to show it's fiery heat waves!

as for using a heater - if your placement has it exposed to sun or your room gets really warm then heater is not needed. I use heaters cuz my tanks are in basement where it feels like the a/c is on all the time & I wish I was in a warmer room but my discus needed temps in the 80's, otherwise w/o a heater my temps probably will chill down to 72-76.

good luck!

Small frequent water changes can lower the temp at a safe rate. What is your reasoning for not doing WCs?

pure sarcasm.... everybody is mentioning chillers.... water change is the quickest most simple way to lower it... my old tank ran 90-95 in summer everyday for a month... water changes and a fan blowing on my sump is all i did..

I picked up on the sarcasm right away. I was wondering why nobody was mentioning water changes.

this always makes me

turn off the heaters whats the point if your heaters are working right then they should turn them self off if its hot they only turn on when the water is cold
you gain nothing by turning them off or unplugging them

90 is nothing don't panic until the tank hits 96 then do a big water change
