EMERGENCY!!!

You have reffered to your pH as being "around 7.0" and being "good". My question is, what was the pH level before you put the wood in the tank? How big was your aro? Seems to me if the piece of wood was 3 foot, then it probably released a lot of tannis. Which could result in large pH swing.

are you guys considering charcoal ,carbon or is there a diffrent kind of charchoal

Clear the water with a sachet of good quality charcoal in either a HOB or Cannister. Carbon is excellant in removing all kinds of volatile organic compounds including tanic acids. When it clears up you can be certain that it has removed most other potential problem chemicals that the wood may have introduced.

Take out the wood imediately and soak it several times as others have sugested until it no longer stains the water its sitting in for at least a week.

Continue with small daily water changes (10-20%) and change your carbon every couple of days until the tank is clear.

Im so sorry to hear of your loss....

i soaked the wood in hot water and drained my tub several times the wood seems like its not leaking any more. i did a water change and checked my ph level and it was a little higher at 7.4 but now is stable at 6.8 water seems to be pretty clear now after the water change. looks like i got to buy another aro though. my redtail cat is fine and my tiger shovelnose is good as well the oscars are still good but there built like tanks anyways. my pair of texas cichlids are scratching a little so im going to have to watch for some stress in them. other than that it really sucks my aro is gone.he was around 15 in.

i have the feeling that water change killed it.

how much did you change?

I think he did this A.D.

If there's been a 6.8 to 7.4 pH swing in the last 36 hours (from your first post to your last), you might have just found your culprit. While raising pH can be less stressful than lowering it, it doesn't mean there isn't any stress. If your Aro was anything close to sensitive to water quality, that might have contributed.

I added new wood to my tank and it changed the PH of the tank to 8.0. Take this into account if you are using a ph test kit that maxs out at 7.4. It may be going further than you can test to.

i know it seems to not be the case with you or maybe just this specific piece of wood
but my RBP's love the brownish acidic water that the bog wood gives = i use peat in my filters to enhance it
