emo oscars???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im not going to say anything about the tank sizes and their occupants from what youve said that wont be a problem with the 600g build and future pond but if it was me Id add another hob filter or canister and do at least a 50% water change at the very least once a week just my two cents oh and Id stay away from feeders

drop the temp of the tank a bit to slow the fishes metabolism a bit, this means that they will grow slower, eat less and will stay healthy longer in the smaller tank, until the 600 and pond is up and running, hope all goes well for you, better hurry with that 600, lol

If things really start going bad with water quality and sulkiness im sure you could ask your LFS to hold one or two of the fish for you while you get your 600 up

GOOD LUCK !

umm, acually the feeders are the cheapest fish to break in a new tank. ive been told by a few people that when you start a new tank that the first few fish you put in will die anyway. so every tank ive started ive put in a few feeders for a week or so for observation. it seems to work. the tsn eats silversides (frozen) and right now the rtc is eating mealworms and normal worms. both are supplemented with krill. the oscars are pellet fed.

Thanks and beleive me ive been chompin at the bit for that tank! the TSN still has more then adequte room to pick up speed before snatching his food and aprears comfy and energetic. we do a waterchange once a week while vacumming the stones in the bottom to make sure his waters good. and our LFS is the reason we have the RTC. he was getting beaten up by the large ciclids that were in the tank with him and i couldnt leave him there. hes beefed up and grown his fins, tail and barbel back that were raggy. no fish of mine will go for a visit there!

Well you were told some of the dumbest information I've heard in a while from someone that obviously doesn't know anything about the nitrogen cycle or how to cycle a tank... The previous poster(s) are stating how prone feeder fish are to disease and parasites because of the poor conditions they are kept and breed in lfs and that this usually 90% of the time is how people introduce these diseases or parasites into their tank that kill their fish. "breaking in" a tank involves getting the nitrogen cycle completed in a tank. No fish should die when added to a properly cycled tank. That's a ridiculous statement. You don't just "drop fish in and they die to break the tank in." Sure, that'll get the nitrogen cycle going via just throwin' fish away. Of course we now know a tank is just as easily cycled without killing fish by performing a fishless cycle with ammonia doses.

As far as the whole tank size issue, IMO people shouldn't take on a RTC or TSN if their largest tank is a 55g and they "plan" to make these large in wall builds and in door ponds. We all know that's much easier said and planned than done, and how costly these setups are. If something falls through (such is life, it happens) you're stuck with at largest a 55g tank and a TSN and RTC. Irresponsible decision IMO.

i heard RTCs can grow very fast (1.5 inches a month is what i heard) and a 5 inch fish even is WAY too big for a 30 (one of them). get that 600 ASAP

Yes life happens. im happy with mine and know that irresponcibility would be if i had no clue on how big they were gonna get, if i had no finantial way to provide for them, or if i continued to let negitivity rule my decitions. ive never raised fish before, but my partner has raised plecos, small catfish, and a couple oscars. all i was asking for was advice, not agression. I know how to test water, feed my fish, and be a responcible pet owner by finding out what i do not know or understand. And i apologize if i offended you somehow.

Maybe you should reread my message. You got my advice in my original post and there is no aggression, as you put it, in either of my responses. Negative, well not much positive can come from keeping a RTC, Oscar, and TSN stocked in 30 and 55g tanks. You certainly didn't offend me, lol. IMO=in my opinion. If you find my opinion to be aggressive or negative there's nothing I can do about that. :screwy:

Umm, I hate to bring this up since you are getting a nice sized tank and all, but RTCs need over 1000 gallon tanks/ponds - and they grow fast.
