LOL I have a simular problem with my aqua clear, but its not noisy all the time sometimes its so quite i dont know its on, other times i can barely hear the tv.
I have an EMP 400. I just bought an AC110 to replace it. Ahhh... peace and quiet.
marineland's emperor 400? what's AC? just got a marineland 400... haven't tested it yet. 
if it's noisy i'll return it.

my mom's 400 does this alot, and what i usually do is just kinda halfway unplug it to make the motor stop then start again then it's usually fine. OR what could be wrong is that the impeller has something in it and needs to be cleaned. other than that, her 400 is always peaceful.
watch out for Whisper 60 or larger models too, i've used whispers for a long time (have one that's 20 years old) and they've always been silent up until i got the 2 whisper 60s for my oscar in my room where i sleep, whispers are only good up to the Whisper 40 for silence
