yes. marineland HOB filters are loud.
Not if they are properly maintained like any filter.

Try cleaning or replacing the impeller like the others have suggested.

When purchasing used aquatic equipment it is always a good ideal to break it down and give it a good cleaning you never know the conditions its coming from, I've had good fortune with the emp. 400 make sure everything is seated properly and clean before purchasing parts start off with the free fixes 1st then progress to spending the cash lol good luck.

Not to jack ur thread op.... but i just bought a 75 gallon tank off a buddy and im Currently running a 30 gallon with a penguin 350. I'm want to keep the 350 and add another hob filter preferably for my 75. Would another 350 work or a ac110? Im a noob when it comes to the canisters. Thanks Al

WOoooo! I just took it apart and gave it a good rinse and now its nice and quiet I think it had some charcoal stuck somewhere. You guys rock!! Thanks for all your help everyone.

had them for years and they do indeed have there moments, completely disassembling the filter to clean it out normally helps, I never had a problem with them being noisy till I switched to sand, now I verbally abuse them for all the disassembling and cleaning I have to do to shut them up.

I have sand in my tank too, I guess I will just clean it when I do my WC. But I've never owned an emperor 400, are they pretty good filters? I've read good things...

Glad you got it fixed. Emporers are pretty good. I have one (not currently using it though), and have no complaints. It got noisy but I changed the impeller and it went back to being silent.

I have no clue what fish stores are in Deland, but there are two good ones in Longwood (Fishy Business and Marine Depot. My favorite was Exotic Aquarium, but they just closed.) In Daytona on the same road that the race track is on (brain dead right now) on the other side of I-95, is a wholesale (mostly) fish store but they do retail sales too.

Ive always used the penguins with much sucess, but it seems the aquaclear is a favorite round these parts. Can somebody give me the lowdown on why these filters are so highly praised??
