i run 4 emperor 400's, love them, don't have experience with the AC's. I do know, however, that it's really easy to find 400's on amazon.com for under $50. i bought three of them a few months ago, i think it was $148 shipped.

The presence of Air-thriving (Nitrobacter,or Nitrosomonas?)On the Bio-Wheels makes it the superior filter.But i do agree with making at least one of the filters an ac for straight bio/mech.But as a standalone filter,go with the emporer.Seems like their whole R&D background labwise is alot more sturdier than ac or hagen.Anyway,Bio-Wheels all the way.
On the AC you rinse the sponge and you are good to go and go and go and go and go and go..... How much did you say the replacement pads are for the Emp? On my AC110 I drop the carbon and triple up on the ceramic.
Also, I just bought TWO AC110 for the price of one Emp 400. but that is another story. AC rule, in my humble opinion. The best bang for the buck filter.

Nice try though INfact I get better filtration out of both my AC 110 & My E-400 with Pot scrubbers.. Oh well

Have used both and like the Emperor much better (and much easier to customize too). The extra media containers give you the option of additional bio-media (or conversion for wet-dry operation or water polishing)
The negative on all the Emporer's I have owned is a little more water noise than the AC.

If you want water movement on the tank, get two Emp. 280's to keep the surface moving, or a powerhead and a 400. I like the biowheel's so I vote for the Emp's. You can't go wrong with either one, just pick what you like. Another option is a Magnum 350 cannister with a biowheel attachment. You will get better water movement than a HOB. Alot of people are not fans of the Mag's but I love mine!
i have a 55 with two ac 70s and they pump out water like its nobodies business and they werent a bank breaker either. When i bought the second i bought a powerhead too but quickly decided to return it cause im not sure i need the whirlpool that would be created with that much water flow.
To people you claim the emporer is more customizable im not sure how that could be. The vast empty pit the ac gives you to fill with what ever your heart desires is hard beat (heck you could keep a small fish in there!).

HOB IS FAIL!! Someday were gonna look back at HOB like we do at UGF at least i do.
