Emperor 400 Vs Aquaclear 110, Review.

tldnr, 110AC FTW.

I just cut the back of the cartridge and dump out the carbon. I've been rinsing and reusing them for about 4 years now.

The grey plastic cartridges are perfect for biomax too. I line them up and they can hold quite a bit of bio.

The only thing I font really care for is the spray bar. I just don't see the point as water is either running under the wheels or sprayed on top. Either way, the wheels are wet and exposed to air.

Well thats another way to go.

You can even re build yor catridges filling them up with some more carbon and just sew the floss to hold it.

Spray bars are ok IMO

I used to like the Emperor 400s. I had 2 on my 75 gallon running for around 10-11 years without a single problem. I ended up replacing simply because I had them so long and it was so cheap. I ended up going with a FX5 simply for flow and media capacity at the end of the day. Amazing filters for the $, but they can be damn load because of the bio-wheels when water is returned to the tank (especially if you have a lot of evaporation).

Also had a AC110 for a bit, but frankly do not remember anything about it.

Ac110 all the way, better built, better flow, quieter, even better looking IMO...there's a reason why most monster fish keepers using hobs use ac110...guarantee If you did a poll here the ac110 wins by a landslide

Emperor 400 for me. It's a sealed unit so it's leak proof and start right up during a power failure. No need to stick a finger in to jump start the motor like the older AC. Quiet and no more cheap plastic rattle noises.

400 Pro-Tip: Open the grey cartridge and lay both halves on the floor. Fill both sides with biomax, little cylinders standing up next to each other. Spray the full trays with water from a clean spray bottle. Place the trays in the freezer, careful not to spill out the biomax. Leave in the freezer for 10 mins. The trays will be frozen to the biomax. Now you can place both halves together without the biomax running all over the place. Insert in filter, a voila, you have a double layer of biomax.

True On power failure...I hate having to start them up again...takes forever LOL plus if the water level is low....not good LOL

Decent review. Both good filters. I have been using both for many years. I am currently running 12 AquaClears and 6 Emperors. Most of these filters have been running for many years (15-30+). Both are reliable. Replaced one O ring on an AquaClear in all that time. I like the bio wheel on the emperors, however the holes on spray bars always need cleaning to remove clogged build up. Takes more time to clean an emperor than an AquaClear. AquaClears have better flow. So after all that IMO the AquaClear is the best HOB filter ever made. Emperors come in 2nd place.
