Emperor Cichlid a close relative to Cichla? Discussion please!

Its good to see that the emps are getting more attention now I have thought for a long time that they were very overlooked and underappreciated.Even on this forum community they are not discussed very much.I have just about lost track of how long I've had mine for but I'm almost certain that its close to ten years now and its about two feet in length. The member Marius seems to be such a student of them, always sharing interesting information and beautiful tank photos.

If I may ask, what are the stats on the tank they are in? Size? Filtration?

My emperor is in a 180 which has been his home for the past three years.I have a three foot long wet /dry filter down in the cabinet and a350 Magnum at the other end of the tank. His tankmates are an eight inch Champsachromis Caerulius,Aristochromis Christyi and various synodontis catfish.I have a picture in my profile page.I have raised him almost exclusively on pellets and flakes since he was two inches.

Thanks for the kind words. I'd be interested in a little more data, size of the tank, tank mates, aggression, what had he or she been fed so far. Anything you can think of. Pictures would be good too :)

HEH, answered already, I had to wait until after class to "submit" ...and by then you answered already. :D

400 gal Tenecor, 8'L x 3'W x 27"H
Filtered by 3xFX5s, polishing powerheads, and as soon as possible a custom sump (200 something)
Tank mates: a colony of Kitumba frontosas (22) ...perfect dithers :headbang2
Here's an older shot of the tank

I promise I'll get some new shots up asap.

Oh yeah, you also asked about aggression. My emp is peaceful for the most part untill I want to add a decent sized newcomer,I have lost a beautiful yellow Leptura,Venustus and had to return a Chilotilapia Rhoadesii before it was killed. It ignores the other fish in the tank untill feeding time which is when it will sometimes chase them away from the pellets or it will get up to the surface and splash the water to scare the others away.

I would love to own one with a colony of fronts...Are they aggressive towards other tang fish or just to their own species?

Its not the most aggressive fish that I've kept but mine is definately the boss of the tank and does not appreciate newcomers.

I wouldn't recommend keeping them with anything but bulky tangs: frontosas, ctenochromis horeii, lobochilotes labiatus ...but if one has a pair, unless they are housed in a massive tank, all the tankmates will be toast once they spawn. One of the reasons I don't want them to spawn yet is the colony of Kitumbas ..I don't want to imagine the damage :nilly:
