Emporer 400

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
emperor 400 is a excellent filter there is a guy on aquariacentral selling 3 of them complete for 65.00 not each but for all 3 of them shipped! thats a great deal.

All impeller driven filters can make noise, period.
Get enough abrasives run through the impeller and they will all get loud.
The AC is a quality filter and so is the Emp.
Each has strong points and weaknesses.
This usually ends up with a mine is better thing.
AC..all the way….
Emp is best….
The media choices for an Emp are not limited to the "E" cartridge.
A simple search would give you a number of alternatives to the Marineland cartridge.

I love them. I run with no cartriges, my C-530 runs the mechanical so just the wheels for me. If I added extra bio-media like rings or balls I'm pretty sure it would outperform the AC's in that department, but I don't need to.

Noise wise they are fairly quiet, but I had to take 2 out of commission recently due to the noise, they were just over 15 years old though I think.

Mine were quiet except for when carbon got lodged in the impeller, when that happens you can usually pump the impeLler housing to dislodge the carbon

i had my emp 400 for 7 years and its never been loud i dont know where you guys are saying they get loud when i never heard mine get loud...

Sounds like I need to do some more researching. Thanks. I will check them both out. When it gomes down to it, I will eventually be going with a rena filstar xp3 and then have a HOB. I prefer to have over filtration. right now I only have one penguin 200 and a internal tetra 10i on my 75 but its only gonna be that way for a little while until i can get some cash to upgrade.

I was considering just getting a xp2 but the cost difference is just 30 bucks and the more filtration the better, plus if...when I do upgrade I will already have a big enough filter to take me there.

Where can I find these filters for cheaper than petsmart?

It's noticeable as far as noise is concerned, but not bad. If you keep the water topped off, you won't hear falling water at all, but you'll still hear the impeller a bit. You also don't need to do the cartridge replacement. Just take the cartridge out, rinse it in water (tank water preferred, tap is fine though), and put it back in. You never replace the bio-wheels. The two extra-media inserts are good for bio media or filter floss.

The AquaClear 110s are also nice though. I have both running on my 55 now.

What makes the aqua clear better than the rest? It would seem that it could be louder since it has a waterfall off the back.

I was thinking of buying an AC110 from petsmart and this guy was there that had 4 tanks all over 55g and one was saltwater, he basically told me AC110's are crap and showed me the EMPs and i got a emp 400 for my 55g, and i love it. It was kinda loud at first, and still is a bit noisy. Although when i go to bed i turn me Air conditioner on for 3 hrs and im asleep by then and it helps if your a heavy sleeper/ don't wake up easy. (thank you 2 a day football practices lol)

I have both filter in my bedroom for over a year now and cant hear them at all, just the water trickleing.I also have the same cartridges in the 400, all you have to do is rinse them off and place them back in good as new.
