I really like the idea of getting a bichir in combination with some cichlids. That would satisfy me AND the boyfriend I think.
Are ctenopomas relative of the leaf fish? Do you see them often in LFS?

You may have to target feed. Giving the top feeders floating food,then the bottom feeders sinking food,works just fine for me. thats why mutli carnivore tanks take away from enjoyment of the kill. (except in case of pygos where they all can "share" a big piece of food)
