convict a firemouth some silverdollars and a pictus cat and if you want a gentle tank get 2 cory cats, 2 festivums a keyhole and chuck in the silver dollars.

+1 for silver dollars and convicts

Well I have 5 silver dollars in my 150 gal community that I am hoping to get big, along with 2 pictus (gonna get another since one of their little friends recently passed). So I am looking for things I haven't had.

I really like the idea of getting a bichir in combination with some cichlids. That would satisfy me AND the boyfriend I think.

Are ctenopomas relative of the leaf fish? Do you see them often in LFS?

1 sen, 1 del, pair of orange pike cichlids or firemouths :)

Or.. 2sens a del and a few ctens :P

my 2cents tells me your boyfriend (and most of us) like bichirs for their one of a kind look and piscivorous nature. that being so, make sure the bichir is the ONLY carnivorous fish in there. because if you get other fish or cichlids that are carnivorous, they will end up competing/stealing the fish inteded for the bichirs consumption and take away from the enjoyment/ add to irritation... ive learned this from owning lots of rare bottom dwelling carnivores and one hungry/greedy oscar. when i wanna watch one certain fish stalk/catch its prey, the drum roll starts and then the oscar comes clumsilly wiggling into the scene, kills the suspence, the music and the moment, and steals the prey if it doesn't miss and crash into the glass like oscars usually do and scare it away.

Try 3 Senegal Bichirs,and a T bar cichlid,or Convict,or Green Terror,or Firemouth. Severums will get to big in a 55 IMO.

as i said before, the problem with this is if one of your fish become "alpha" it will end up snatching all the prey and your weakest/least motivated carnivore will get nothing.

thats why mutli carnivore tanks take away from enjoyment of the kill. (except in case of pygos where they all can "share" a big piece of food)

You may have to target feed. Giving the top feeders floating food, then the bottom feeders sinking food, works just fine for me. Pretty easy really.
