You may have to target feed. Giving the top feeders floating food, then the bottom feeders sinking food, works just fine for me. Pretty easy really.

live foods neither sink nor float indefinitely... they sorta swim wherever they want to and wolves + prepared food can't happen honorably. or happen.

first thing that comes to mind is a JD or ebjd. they dont get huge and from my experience (only had 1) are pretty peaceful. and not a carnivore mine preferred cichlid pellets over everything

Well this is what I do in my community tank. Most of the faster swimmers will pick the floating pellets off the top of the water (if they can't get pellets mid-sink) and my catfish get all the sinking stuff. I mix my different pellets together so equal parts make it into the tank.

I've never had a JD of any kind and I have always wanted one cause of their great look and you can buy them almost anywhere.

I want to shoot for cichlids + 1 bichir. I think it would satisfy the both of us (and I would choose the cichlids which makes me pretty happy).

I vote for the Firemouth. Mine is peaceful and has come around being friendly ever since i got ride of the convict.

There seems to be a consensus that Firemouths will be great. I think that's a good idea. I just haven't seen them in the LFS but since I don't plan on stocking till the weather is warmer (and I can take my tank outside to clean it) I have plenty of time to see if they can order for me.

Could I keep a JD with Firemouth AND bichir?
