I've never heard anyone have long term success keeping cyps with fronts. Even jumbos will not get big enough to not be eaten. I've had a 12" front try to eat a 4" tropheus and they're much taller profile than cyps. Try it out and let us know how it goes

Are there any tang that they wont eat? apart from emperors?

Yup. benthochromis tricoti and haplotaxodon microlepsis make great tank mates. Both are peaceful fish that get large and wont be eaten. Neither type will stress the fronts either. XL comps and calvus are probably ok as well.

Even if they're well fed they will often eat fish at night. Can't unteach millions of years (or whatever)of behavior and evolution. You seem pretty set on trying your ideas out, so I would go for it. Maybe we're all full of s**t....

Sorry bumping an old thread... But was wondering if it's normal for these guys to swim at the top of the tank? They just go back n forth pretty much all day till I feed. Once feeding is done they rest for a little while and resume their top of the tank swim. I'm wondering is it because my water is not hard enough? Nitrates at about 15ppm nitrites 0 hardness probably at about 130ppm ph 7.5. Any ideas?
