the bottm pic is the divided gular plate common to bichirs,bowfins also have a gular plate as do lungfish but it is singular-Anne
 
found betwen the lower jaws its used to compress food to aid in swallowing -Anne

Jed, Fish cannot physically choke.

It is impossible.

choke - To interfere with the respiration of by compression or obstruction of the larynx or trachea.

which is physically impossible for fish.


what CAN happen - The rocks can clog the digestive track. Or they are just huge and stress out the fishes organs.
 
Well, if you want to get technical then a fish cannot choke (no trachea or larynx),
but the gravel in this guys throat definitely interfered with respiration.
He maybe could go up for air, but it obviously didn't go into his body.
