Enough Filtration?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what size are they? and how long will you be keeping them in the 50?

i recall you having just pruchased small rbp's about the size of a quarter, right? i think your fluval should work fine. you're probably not feeding anything too messy, yet. the 304 is a adequate filter for a 50 gal tank. if you start feeding larger live foods as they grow, you might need more, but i really doubt you will because you can always increase your water changes. good choice.

and of course, eventually you will need a larger tank for that school of rbp's, as they grow.

it is enough for now. piranha are very messy eaters and have a high bioload. a good rule of thumb is that you want 10x per hour turn over so when they get bigger 5-6 inches plus. right now on my 75 gallon with a 10 inch rhom i have an ac110(500 gph) and a flual 305(260 gph) for a total for 760 gph turn over, also on that tank i have a ac70 powerhead which adds 400gph of cirulation. Powerheads are good additions bc they help filtration with better circulation and excerise the Ps. On my 90 gallon i have an ac70 powerhead, fluval 405 and an emporer 400. which is a total of 740 gph, thats ok bc all that is in that tank is a 5 inch manuelli. i would recoment that you get a 125 gallon tank in the future for 6 RBPs anything less will be a little cramped. when you get there you are going to want to get arund 1000-1250 gph hour turn over. if you have the $$$ spring fo the 405 or the fx5.

I have 6 rbp's being transfered to a 50 gal tank...would a Fluval 304 be enough filtration for them?

Hi.

You might have the filtratation problem sorted with that fluvial at least for a while, if it provides a filtration rate of at leats 3 to 4 times the whole tank per hour.

I believe you have another problem here, soon your reds will outgrow that tank, you need to get a 100 gal at least or get rid of half of your stocking.

Cheers.

She's only had them 3 weeks and you're already encouraging getting a 100 gallon? Not trying to challenge your knowledge, just learn from you. So fill me in. What's the timeline on "soon"? Everybody knows the sooner the better but doesn't she have atleast 8-12 months before it becomes a necessity?

Actually that's the main issue about P' keeping, it happens to a lot of people (me included) we get a "big" tank, 30, 40, 50 gal and buy our little shoal without a prev. reding just to realize that our "hughe" setup is going to be outgrown for our fish "soon".

When taking about P's it is better to get the biggest setup we can get, the biggest the better.

Regarding the timeline of "soon", well I am just guessing, it depends on the size of the fish, I understand her fish are small... correct me if I am wrong 3" to 4"?.

Lets say her P's are 3" I guess that setup could do for 6 months, I wouldn't advise to keep the P's in that 50 gal beyond that time unless she gets loads of filtration and still a 50 gal would't be good for 6 rbp.

The other option and if she can't get a bigger setup, is that after those 6 months she gets rid of three reds and keeps 3, in that case the 3 reds are gonna be a little cramped but I guess she can get away with it.

Don't worry about challenging my knowlege, I don't pretend to be the smart aleck of P' keeping, I am just trying to help a little regarding what I have experienced and read.

Cheers.
