enough filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wanna know how I feed my fish? good I will tell you. If I am feeding pellets I will put one or two at a time when they get eaten the I put some more. If five pellets hit the bottom without getting eaten no more food goes in. I have tongs to grab out the ones that fell.

There should never be any food waste in your tank except for what is chewed up and spit out by messy eaters and you should do your best to clean this up also. This is why it states on the label of every fish food I have ever seen "Only feed as much as your fish will eat in a few minutes". This in fact can and should be done with every type of fish food.

bio-weels dont "filter" the water but provide a place for beneficial bacteria to colonise. is it a white or green cloudy? if green get a UV steriliser. id get a W/D going with fine fine pre-filter anyho.

2 Emperor 400s = 800gph

wouldn't that mean his 75gal would be cycling 10.66667 times an hour?
Yes, when they're clean. Some of the manufacturers rate their filters running EMPTY not with media OR dirty media. 800gph is very optimistic for 2 Emperor 400s.

So if i got a magnum 350 pro would that be enough and would i be constantly buying parts for it.
I've been told recently that I'm too negative in my responses to questions. I've been trying to decide whether to not give a response or to be more positive when I do. I'm sorry I wouldn't have a magnun in my house unless it's a 44. Over the last 10 years I've probably sold 50 (about $15+ each)of the magnets and almost 20 (about $5-7 each) of the impellers, they don't sell just the shaft which wear and start to make noise as they spin until they stop spinning. The rubber nipples don't last the magnets explode...

That's from someone that DOESN'T sell the filter. I sometimes told customers to take them back to the dealer they bought them from and ask for credit on a decent cannister.

Also, everytime you power water into a 90 degree bend you restrict water flow.

Marineland makes some fine products. the Magnum isn't one of them.

I'm a lil confused. 2-Emporer 400s = 800 gallons per hour. Thus, this would turn over an 80 gallon tank 10x. Since we are talking about a 75 it would seem that that 2 Emporer 400's are more then efficient. Did I miss something? Or did I do the math wrong here?

Anyhow because I'm not very fond of canister filters and because my tank will strictly only be for a single "Wet Pet", I only plan on using 2 Emporer 400's for my upcoming 90 gallon tank. It's close enough imo. Only if I get a 125 will I even consider using a canister. But hey, that's just me.
I responded already to upyun's post already. Sorry I should have explained it better initially. BTW, in the original post the filter was a penguin 350. That doesn't equal an Emperor 400. I't's way short.

I have had 2 magnums for over 6 years now never had to replace anything still running strong and very quite. I guess I must have gotten lucky.

You should see my Red Devil's eating habits man. If I didn't leave the pellets floating on the top for serveral hours, he will never eat. As a matter of fact, there have been several times, I put 7 or 8 pellets in my tank before work and when I return from work almost 10 hours later, most of the time, there are still 2 or 3 pellets left. My fish is only skittish when it comes to taking from the surface. Any time someone new comes into my apartment, the fish goes nutz like a rabid dog. This is why I'm assuming, he will get over this soon.

Do you really think that leaving several pellets in the tank for over 8 hours at a time (not my fault cuz the fish takes his sweet time about eating) could really pollute the water and/or raise my Nitrite/ammonia levels? I'm not sure, but it would appear to me...No.
