I pretty much did the same thing. Filtered my 135 with a bioball sump until I had enough live rock.

I can tell you fish hand, salt is much much more enjoyable than freshwater. Very cool stuff. I just picked up my first green bubble tip anemone this weekend. Between this thing and a few emerald crabs I have, I can sit and watch them for hours coupled with the fish.
Honestly, I have not used much salt mix over the last month or so. Only RO/DI water for evap. Heck I have not mixed any salt period in 2 weeks to be honest. If your tank is setup/filtered properly you do not need water changes (only tap off from evap - which does not need any salt). People mostly rush into this, and cram 1/2 a fish store in a 55g tank, then end up changing water (mixing salt) to compensate for poorly setup tanks (and high nitrate problems) versus fixing the actual problem. Some do it as a cheaper way to replenish calcium (on the smaller tanks). I do not have any coral to worry about calcium atm, but will prob be looking into a calcium reactor when it becomes an issue since my tank is so large.
And your right, eels and rays are pretty bad ass in fresh. But they require such large tangs....like everything else worth collecting in fresh. My wife would leave me if I dropped a 450g tank in her kitchen....LOL
