enough filtration??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I pretty much did the same thing. Filtered my 135 with a bioball sump until I had enough live rock. :D

I can tell you fish hand, salt is much much more enjoyable than freshwater. Very cool stuff. I just picked up my first green bubble tip anemone this weekend. Between this thing and a few emerald crabs I have, I can sit and watch them for hours coupled with the fish.

False. Not mixing salt and Not spending all that extra money on salt is so much better. You try filling a 450 gallon tank with salt water. We have eels we have stingrays we have puffers, we have everything. Even crabs :) lol

Honestly, I have not used much salt mix over the last month or so. Only RO/DI water for evap. Heck I have not mixed any salt period in 2 weeks to be honest. If your tank is setup/filtered properly you do not need water changes (only tap off from evap - which does not need any salt). People mostly rush into this, and cram 1/2 a fish store in a 55g tank, then end up changing water (mixing salt) to compensate for poorly setup tanks (and high nitrate problems) versus fixing the actual problem. Some do it as a cheaper way to replenish calcium (on the smaller tanks). I do not have any coral to worry about calcium atm, but will prob be looking into a calcium reactor when it becomes an issue since my tank is so large.

And your right, eels and rays are pretty bad ass in fresh. But they require such large tangs....like everything else worth collecting in fresh. My wife would leave me if I dropped a 450g tank in her kitchen....LOL

Agree i have done saltwater before and know what your talking about. Ya I only have a 125 and a 55 in the kitchen lol. 450 in basement. I do agree though salt water stuff does look cool but so does the fresh water stuff. Over all fish are so neat. I got some salt mix with one of my tanks and am thinking of setting up my 30 gallon for salt water my wife would like that Alot and keeping her happy makes it available so I can buy more stuff lol

Here is one of my favorite fresh water fish. View attachment 759867

As for filtering I have not tried filter socks too much but just installed one in my sump if you have the room for one. I hope it will be great for my 125 and then I'll install a couple on my larger tank. Allot of people have good luck with them. I also like the fx5 filter for tanks. They are great for all types of filter media and have allot of room for media . Anything for lots of Bio is king.
