ANY co2 system (DIY works perefectly fine and even that is hardly nessicary in most planted tanks)

i'm sorry but this is beyond absurd!! :screwy: just because they arent on MFK doesnt mean there arent extreme planted tanks out there require co2 to thrive

Tetra whisper HOB filters. I had one on my 10 gallon that decided to junk out after two months. I also didnt like their cartridges either, as it reminded me more of a media bag more then anything.

Any Algae removal chemical (kills fish, dosen't work), water clarifier (makes the water cloudier...)....

Actually... API Accu-Clear works quite well at eliminating a free floating algae bloom (just shake it very well, and put it into the filter or it makes the water gray). Any other product, I completely agree with you though.

Marineland stealth heaters peices of ****. mine leaked stray current into the tank since the day i got them didn't replace them because i didn't realise until recently that what i was feeling was electric current.

I've been using the stealth heaters for at least 8 years and have never had any problems with them. I haven't heard of anyone else having this issue either. Since it was leaking current since you got it, it sound like you bought a broken unit.

I would say don't buy Jebo lights because they are poorly built (bad reflectors, exposed wires, inadequately ventilated) and constitute a fire hazard. Admittedly, my experience with them was several years ago so maybe new units work better.

Fish are known to eat rocks and die from the blocked intestine.

While providing a place for beneficial bacteria to grow, the benefit of those added bacteria are usually going to be outweighed by the amount of waste-producing debris trapped in the gravel. It doesn't break even.

Gravel can encourage spawning behavior and mess-making in large cichlids. This can also increase the odds of a ticked off Oscar spitting rocks at the glass. Scares the crud out of me.

I like the clean look and it's easier to make changes and catch fish with a bare-bottomed tank. All my media is in the filtration and it's easier to control there.

So why spend money on it unless you've got fish that need it like jurupari or spiny eels?

I think this one comes down to purely to aesthetic preference. I've been keeping fish with substrate for over 20 years and have never had one die from eating gravel. That being said, I much prefer sand over gravel (again, mostly for aesthetic reasons). Some of use want our fish to breed so that's not really a negative, and what you describe as "encouraging mess making" is what I would call "permitting a fish to display natural behavior".

Says who? It's a fish in a box. That's reality.

In keeping with the logic of your arguments I could go one step further and say that glass tanks are too dangerous because they have the potential to break, so fish should only be kept in fiberglass ponds. After all, it's just a fish in a box and I prefer how it looks from above anyway.

I think this thread would be more useful if we could focus on the pieces of equipment that we've found to really be technical failures rather than just declaring our personal preferences in fish keeping.

Ive burned through to many marineland stealth heaters to count on properly sized tanks.

alot of people on here complain about the poor quality of these heaters nowadays aparently all the stealths used to be made in italy for the longest while then like 2 years ago the company switched to making them in china and low and behold the problems started.
