Thought it was time for an update on these guys.

I wanted a female for my male FH Titus, so I ordered an appropriate size Green Texas "Escondido" from Jeff Rapps.....

...Forgetting that in my intial phone conversation with him he had told me his largest females would be closer to 3 inches in length, not the 4.5 to 5 inch length I wanted. I believe he tried like hell to send me what I wanted, he chose a fish that had a dark marking in it's dorsal, dorsal and anal fins were fairly rounded etc.

So idiotic me tries to pair this poor thing to a male flowerhorn, after a few weeks of trying all I had managed to do was get them to live in some kind of tense peace, the kind of peace that soooo obviously ain't gonna last. I decided to give them a break.

I put "her" in with a "male" sb Green Texas...

...the results were immediate and unmistakable...

...even an idiot like me could see...not only were they in love but the Escondido was a male and the sb was a female. My only defense is early onset senility. :screwy:

I've since split them up and moved the babies to another tank as mom and dad looked ready to spawn again. Short body being a dominant gene 50% of the fry are sb, 50% carry it. If you look very closely you can see both long and short body types.

What is Escondido
The region this particular strain of green Texas comes from, there are several locale specific strains available. Chariel and Escondido are two that I see a lot. Some don't show much discernible difference, some exhibit different pearl shape/size, some exhibit different background color, some have larger nuchal humps than others etc.

There's also a difference in the color of the pearls on the various locale specific strains. Several shades of blue/green/gold.

Not many none hybrid/specialty fish are sterile...aside from Oscars. The female is the SB and the male the normal one.

The shortbody which I thought was male and later realized was female? Or the normal Green Texas which I thought was female but was actually male?

If you meant the short body I had no idea if it would be fertile, at the time I still thought it was male so I was definitely questioning if it was fertile or not. It clearly has a lot of Texas blood so I figured it was worth a shot. It ended up being a female so the question is moot.

If you meant the normal Green Texas, no matter what sex it turned out to be I always knew it was fertile because it's not a hybrid.
