hey everybody,

I rescued a 6" oscar from a 10g tank:irked: about ten days ago that has some serious HITH and a pretty badly infected eye. He is in a 40B by himself with pristine water. This is the third one I have rescued and i have never seen it this bad before. He eats very randomly, odd for an oscar and seems to run into things. I dont know if he already has brain damage, or not.

I have been doing vigorous water changes and treating with antibiotics for the eye but he doesn't seem to be getting better.

If he doesnt get better, I might have to put him down, hope not but i want to be ready. i have never done one before.

What have you guys used in the past that is the least painful for the fish. I heard a few things in the past like clove oil, and seltzer tablet, just wanted to hear your experiences.

thanks guys and gals.

ive never uthanized, in fact im against it, but if you really feel it necessesary decapitation is the quickest and least painful way of doing it imo

decap. would be the fastest, if you do it right and if you are able to cut your own fishes head off. I prefer to do the freezer method, if you dont cut the fishes head off cleanly with decap you are going to put it in a lot more pain than it deserves

I agree, the freezer method is the way to go. Temp drops slowly, motabilism slows down, goes to sleep. I just lost an Oscar this way :( an albino tiger male of a breeding pair :( so sad

meat cleaver. freezer would work too i guess but its probly slow and uncomfortable

its an oscar the most bad-ass fish he'll bang it out (i would use stress-zyme it helped with my buddies oscar with a bad eye)

-clove oil works very well on small fish.. ive never done it on a larger fish
-decap/headcrushing is the fastest and since the brain is severed/destroyed how much pain can there be
-people say vodka and clove oil works well however vodka burns like crazy when i drink it (cept the for the good stuff) i can only imagin how much it would hurt to breath it
-freezer however is just about the most painful fishdeath there is but people like it because they dont have to see it happen
