Well there's a few things you could do...

Clove oil
Freezing
Flush it
Throw it outside like fish farmers do when they cull fish
Vodka

It's not our decision how to do it.. ultimately it's up to you.

I have used the Clove oil method- the vodka menthod- the flushing method, and my fiance has used the throwing method.

None of them are something we like to do.. but you have to do something.

I would see if you can save it first.

Its not the water, she was in with a baby senegal Im growing out and he bit her. I separated her into a five gallon bucket with an airstone and melafix a couple of hours ago, she's in fish heaven now.

So is she healing? I know this sounds barbaric but if I know one of my smaller fish isn't going to make it, I put it in a plastic bag that I save when I buy fish, then I go outside hold the side that is open tightly in my fist and slam it on the side walk. Hope no one flames me for this one but the fish dies immediately. I'm talking about fish that are no larger than 4 inches, The Doctor.

well ur first mistake was sticking it in a bucket with just a air stone. All fish will die if they only have an air stone. Those type of fish should never go in with bichirs. Bichirs althought thought to be pretty peaceful are actually very mean and love to fight

It wouldn't have died because of just having an airstone that quick in a bucket unless the water temp dropped immediately.

It's probably just the trauma that it suffered that killed it.

Honestly id try to save it, and if it dies let it die itself, or use the oil method, banging it on pavements, throwing it out, cutting its head of.... seem a big to much.

^ I have done this as well and is my prefered method on smaller fish. Larger fish get the cutting board and a quick chop. It sounds terrrible but if you have been in the hobby long enough you care more about putting down your fish instantly than personal opinions about methods.

Make it instant if your not going to save it. Nothing is more humane than your fish not knowing what happened...........

Do you think I'm too stupid to realize that? The only other options were to

A. stay in the tank with the Senegal
B. Tank with a breeding pair of cons with fry
C. Oscar tank

The Senegal is like 4 inches and can't swallow a cichlid gold medium pellet without going nuts on it

Why is clove oil considered humane? I used it on my tooth as a numbing agent (as eugenol works well for this if not in super concentrated form (as mine was)). It burns in very badly on an open sore I would put it up there with iodine. Don't get me wrong it is numbing but only after it burns for five of so minutes.

Is there a reason the eugenol works without causing the fish severe pain?

Why not just make up a syringe of potassium chloride?
