i knw what u mean, i clean my tank once a month, I never cycled any of my tanks either!!!

well its not exactly about NOT cycling its about not complicating it to death.

I forgot to add I started purigen to get tannins out. But that is beside the point.

Technology, used properly, can REDUCE the complexity of the hobby and make your life much easier.

Anything can be taken to extreames, of course, but without periodic water testing (I've settled on once a week) and record keeping you have nothing to fall back on in the case of the occasional problem. This same testing can also be used to set water change intervals.

Recreating a biosphere is, by it's very nature, a complicated process and to some hobbiests that's a large part of the attraction.

The question of overcomplication IMO is best answered on an individual basis. When your collection and or set up(s) reach the point that your spending more time caring for them than you are enjoying them then it's time to simplify...

i have come across this recently when trying to set up the reef tank i was doing.
i read, read and read infomation again and again, got told i need this that or this is the right way and the way you are doing it is the wrong way which was info i was given or read elsewhere.
it got so confusing and i was never getting anywhere it lost the fun factor.
now im just buying another fx5 sticking that on and put in some plants, good lighting and some nice wood and doing a grow out tank, its simpler and i know what im doing.
confused you better believe it.

I can't believe how much stuff is advertised to "purify" your water and treat your fish. 99% of this can be done (or avoided) by a decent filter and water changes alone.
