ever impulse bought a fish you couldnt really house?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A texan and a JD when I was 10 or so, the tank I had to put them in wasn't even a tank. It was a critter cage that barely held like 3 gallons and had no filter or heater. The fish weren't tough enough to take it . . . Oh, and I didn't cycle it.

Not yet... but I'm soooo tempted when it comes to RTC's.

I know right? They fool you so bad when the lfs brings them in at like 2" long. Probably some of the cutest little buggers you'll ever see. Only problem is they become hundreds of times bigger within a few years if raised correctly, lol.

I see it all the time on this site. Not sure where all these fish end up. I see the "worry about it later" mentality all the time. Or they are going to upgrade soon and what not. I love it when they claim its going in a pond in their backyard and their location is somewhere with a snowy winter. I understand the appeal, but a lot of times its just irresponsible.

I suspect the originators of threads like that are often responsible months or years later for the "My fish has red gills and is floating sideways twitching" threads.

I impulse bought my elephant noses... they were just too good to pass up. But I had the space and already knew they were compatible with my tank.

There are a lot of serious cichlid guys that will buy rare fish on the spot, with money saved up "just in case." Crazy cichlid keepers.

Yea, I've done it with the red belly pacu myself. Still have him atm but he's about 6 months away from outgrowing the 90gal i have him in. I figure I have 3 options; get a bigger tank, donate him to the local zoo that has a pacu tank, or I heard they are rather tasty....jk. Hopefully he will end up at the zoo as I dont think my wife will let me get a bigger tank just yet.

2 years ago, I was an idiot and new to the hobby, I bought 2 red belly pacu for a 40G tall. lasted about 6 months, they were about 16" and 12"(got them at 3") and beautiful. Came home after being away for the weekend and they had busted the tank. They lived with 2 jacks and a red devil, all dead except for my male jack, Biggest mistake ever and I still have dreams about that tank today. But My male jack survived (in about 2" of water pooled in the corner), still have him today.

Hope the zoo agrees to take him in, but I doubt it.:nilly:

I hope he will end up at the zoo too. I've looked into the local zoo and the pacus they currently have were donated by people like myself so I guess i'll just have to see what happens.
