I called Jeff to ask about them and just bought a pair of Ornatus and a pair of Atromaculatus. He thinks they'll be fine in the 265g with the Festae. I'll have them on Saturday.

I am poor!! Now at least....hahaha it's costing me $780.00 including shipping. Quite an impulse buy, hope my wife doesn't find out. I'll be in big trouble.

I spent all this money and probably six months later, they'll be everywhere for $10 each.


Oh and btw, he didn't say they were bonded, I actually bought a male and female of each species....not an acutal pair.

I think they're so rare because they're difficult to collect and NOT because of their difficulty breeding, predisposition to bloat, HITH, etc.
I predict that by this time next year the F1's will be everywhere.

Good luck with them though.
If you can get either of those two pairs to spawn for you, it'll be worth it!

I'm extremely excited that they're coming. Like a kid on Xmas eve waiting for xmas morning lol. I haven't felt excitement about a fish since the Dovii left me like I have for these. As far spawning, they'll be in a 3 pair tank separated into territories by large pieces of driftwood, maybe it will happen. Either way.......can't wait til they get here.

Balton - As to why they are rare, they come from an area of Colombia that is not commerically collected by the large exporters due to the dangers of rebels and drug dealers. The collectors just were not going to risk their lives for crazy gringos. They been collected before by some crazy european collectors (Alf Strasburg comes to mind, crazy in the good way mind) but until just recently, no one in the states has been able to get them.

You might want to PM Mel O ... he's kept all three species before and can give you a comparison. Though I believe he kept the ornatum, not the sp. ornatum.
