I think most members might not know this species from SA. So someone might think they are hybrid...
This is one of my favorite Cichlasoma I have not posted on the web site.
Anyway , enjoy those beautiful pair !!

I've made space in the 265g for them and did a water change early. It was scheduled for Sunday but since the fish will be here Saturday, I wanted to be ready. The Festae seem to be enjoying the tank without any other cichlids in there lol. The RTM's on the other hand are pissed off since they're temporarily in a 30g.

I sold one Bocourti and looking for a buyer on the other one and pair of Mota's. I might be able to make it all work out if they don't sell, we'll see.

Yup...love those Ornatums....probably the most famous pair in the world hah.

I hope mine turn out as nice as those.

that's AWESOME BALTON!!! i cant wait to see pics of them in your tank, the ornatums are just gorgeous, but yeah i think with both of these fish it will take more than a year for them to be easily available, especially the atromaculatum. its definitely going to be one awesome tank, are you going to divide them when you first put them in? from what i hear these guys aren't as aggressive as festae so do you think your festae will leave them alone, even when breeding?

Note Balton ... those pics are of confirmed ornatum, Jeff is selling sp. ornatum ... they might not be (and most likely are not) the same species. Jeff's and Conkel's are coming from the other side of the contential divide from the known range of ornatum.

Note I'm not saying that to rain on your parade, they are still cool fish none the less.

Don't worry d.p, you're not hurting my feelings. ;) I respect the fact that you call it like it is...plus all you're fish expertise, I'm always awed by your insider knowledge of vendors, importers and breeders.

The fish should arrive at my house by noon today if all goes well. Unfortunately, I'm at work and my wife will be the one to take in the box and acclimate them to the tank. I wanted to be the one to do the honors but I couldn't the morning off :(. Pics to come soon.

All excited for you Michael.
Thanks for sharing your anticipation with members.

I did want to mention that I had reservations about the festae sharing the tank with the ornatus and atros. I feel that festae are generally a notch up on the aggressive scale from these two species.

You assured me that your festae pair is relatively docile. I still claim that you may need to play referee - so please keep an eye on them.
I would never claim that any species was compatible with others merely to make a sale. I've said it many times. It's not all about a one time transaction.

As for the doom and gloom post about babies of these being all over in a year - I can clearly read between the lines. We all know where your support lies and why you would add that comment to a thread where someone is sharing his excitement and looking for info on long term maintenance of the species. There was no reference or inquisition made to marketing of the species.

However, I can add from experience of breeding atros on and off for nearly 20 years that they do not produce large 'Cichlasoma-type' egg plaques. They lay relatively large eggs that number < 150 from large adults. Younger, less mature pairs are even less fecund or prolific.

The distinction between ornatus and cf. ornatus is made to be politically correct in reference to literally mention that the 'type species' individuals of ornatus were collected from Ecuador and cf. ornatus be designated to the fish collected in Colombian waters, specifically the Rio San Juan.

Seiichi and I are and have been in regular contact as well as involved in countless fish business transactions for many years.
His photographic expertise is amazing. I lack the patience, experience, and equipment to take photos like that. We've all coveted over those pics of ornatus he shared. They are the same fish I have here.

In fact, I'd be extremely interested to see my Ecuador shipper send me some ornatus one day. My firm belief is that there would not be any noticable differences between the populations.

Looking forward to Michael's arrival home from work to see his new treasures.

Hi and thanks for posting, that's good information. My name is not Michael though, that must be another customer of yours. :)

As far as breeding and marketing, that's not my intention. These fish will be in a community showtank and I'm just as happy to simply watch and observe them.

When I said you thought the Festae would be ok, I forgot to mention that I told you they are not very aggressive. I'll keep a good eye on them regardless. Thanks again Jeff for the advice and the super awesome fish.

They've arrived btw, my wife has the bags floating in the water. :headbang2
