Short video of what I'm describing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWPmmKrl_e4

This originated as about 500 meal worms, I let them mature into beatles for about 3 months before taking more than 10-20 worms every few days...now I can take around 30-60 daily for my animals and never run out...

Note:

The video is still being processed for upload to YouTube, if a moderator could embed it when it does I'd appreciate it.

Any questions feel free to ask - like I said before I have yet to run into any fish that turn these down, and they will fatten up an emaciated, dying fish, in a matter of weeks.

I used to feed meal worms to my cod, but the guy at the lfs warned me against using them as the sole food source as the exoskeleton can clog up their guts? True or false?

False in fish in my experience - compaction is a common problem in reptiles, but I think fish have more advanced digestive systems since bugs are their main source of nutrients in the wild.

There are things called "super worms" that get much larger and are much harder to breed that will remain alive in the guts and have some pretty gnarly jaws. I wouldn't feed them on a regular basis. But to the best of my knowledge meal worms are totally harmless.

So how much did Petco give you fro running their add during the flick? ;)

Good thread.

Haha, didn't even notice the sound. Ignore all of that, Discovery channel is the only thing I've ever got on :D

EDIT: Dr. Joe could you please embed the above video for me?

Aren't you the one who reconstructs fish skeletons? I was told that meal worms are used in cleaning animal bones and whatnot for forensic study.

do you ever separate the worms, pupae & beetles into the other drawers? that way they dont start eating each other. if not would a single container be as effective as long as theres air holes? in thinking a storage rubbermaid container with a cut out mesh screen on the lid.

Yeah, I never separated mine and they did fine. They may eat each other, but they'll produce so many you wont even notice
