I think you are absolutely right! people panic at the slightest things regarding fish, always look for the most unlikely diagnosis and fail to do the simple more obvious things like water changes.
I find rays rarely if ever get ill if no changes are made to their environment, there is usually a reason they fall ill, in many cases changes to their husbandry ie one less water change per week for example due to other interests or a sudden extra work load on the keeper are the biggest factors, stability in most cases (not every) is the key.
Again so pleased you got a happy ending, there isn't enough Snow Leopards on here to be losing any.
