I purchased this amazing animal from a LFS last month. I was told that it was a male Mayaheros urophthalmus and he's about 11 inches in length. I strongly suspect that he is some type of Amphilophus species. He's proven to be an extremely picky eater and really hasn't eaten anything that I've served up since he arrived over FOUR weeks ago! Thus far, he has refused a variety of high quality flake foods, cichlid pellets/sticks, frozen bloodworms, frozen misys shrimp, frozen krill, frozen silversides, frozen beef heart, Omega One Frozen Cichlid Formula, fresh tilapia, live blackworms, live earthworms, and many of the above after pre-soaking in Garlic Guard. I also empirically treated him with PraziPro x 3 doses just in case he was harboring some type of parasite. He has never stooled, but he isn't eating so I am not too surprised here. I cannot believe that he is still looking so good, let alone still alive. He remains interactive and seemingly healthy in every way. I want to avoid a feeder fish diet which I now strongly suspect was what the previous owner was providing. He resides in his own 75 gallon tank and water parameters have been favorable Thanks in advance for any guidance that anyone can provide. I love this fish and want to see him thrive over the long term!Hercules.jpg

You are right to assume it isn't uropthalmus, below are uropthalmus from Cenote Azul(of course uropthalmus from Progresso or Chichenitza, or Isla Mujeres, all look quite different) . Video of uropthalmus below
Azul imovie edit
And you are probably right in assuming a barred Amphilophus...... but
without knowing what lake or river in in Nicaragua it, or its ancestors came from, its impossible to pinpoint species, because they all look so similar, There are Lake Nicaragua. L Managua, L Xiloa, L Apoyo, L Apanas (etc)all with separate but similar looking species, all with at least few diffent species n each lake
maybe if you take a sample of its DNA to a lab that has access to all the data bases with separate DNA samples from all Amphilophus there is a chance of a possible ID
Similar thread below
ID amphilophus

And Here's a barred Amphilophus I had, sold as A amarillo(only found in Lake Xiloa)

Welcome aboard
That's a great looking cichlid.

Welcome to the forum!
I agree, amazing looking cichlid!

Definitely a barred amph of some sort. Maybe Midas? A. Hoga is probably the closest match though.

Doesn't quite look like hoga to me, I find head shape is a little more slanted for Hoga usually and the color is a bit different. It is some kind of barred amphilophus for sure. If I had to guess I would go with "red isletas". But we can't give you 100% sure answer like duanes says.
