I agree, for long term sustainability of a species, it is best to cull the young, not the breeders. But seeing as we do not even know how long they live, how fast they reproduce in wild, if they are different species or just variants, what max wild size is, how many there are in the wild right now, what else may be having a negative effect on the population besides the pet trade, etc. etc. etc. then it is irresponsible to collect any of them.... but that is not how the pet trade works. There is no way to enforce a fully responsible method of collection for this wild animal, not while they are worth money. The best thing to do is make responsible decisions personally, for instance buying captive if you can, not collecting them for status, keeping only the amount that you can care for, for life, etc..
