extinct turtle

went to the vet today to pick up some stuff and the lady at the front said do you wanna see something you will never see again and i was like yeah sure and it was this cool looking turtle it was completly black the lady said it was actually an extinct(or suppose to be extinct) turtle and someone found it swimming in there swimming pool today i forget the name of it tho pretty cool looking turtle.

hahaha....an extinct (Supposedly) turtle swimming in their pool?????

Was it a spotted turtle (mostly black) some think they are "extinct" in NJ .

Sounds like it and some seem close to all black.

Yeah I can't think of any turtle species that is "extinct" from NJ. Maybe "extirpated" from that state would be a better term. Most likely it was a Spotted Turtle which is a very secretive species. But I remember hearing about a melanistic population of Northern Red-bellied turtles there. It could have also been a Bog turtle which is another very uncommon species.
